Understanding the deeper meaning of culture
"The Soul of Popular Culture" is a significant contribution not only to understanding contemporary culture, but also to comprehending what is going on beneath the surface in the collective life and psyche of America. The contributors to this volume have extensive experience in depth psychology, which gives their analyses a dimension one will never find in the typical...

Go ahead read the excerpt included here at Amazon. This looks like an example of what passes for scholarship these days: erudite academics discussing popular culture. Understanding the deeper meaning of culture, November 4, 2006
This review is from: Soul of Popular Culture: Looking At Contemporary Heroes, Myths, and Monsters (Paperback)
"The Soul of Popular Culture" is a significant contribution not only to understanding contemporary culture, but also to comprehending what is going on beneath the surface in the collective life and psyche of America. The contributors to this volume have extensive experience in depth psychology, which gives their analyses a dimension one will never find in the typical movie review or newspaper commentary on some pop singer. For those wanting to understand the deeper currents of our time, this is a valuable contribution.

Go ahead read the excerpt included here at Amazon. This looks like an example of what passes for scholarship these days: erudite academics discussing popular culture. I might have found this more entertaining, had I not been forced to look up so many complicated words used in the excerpt - words for which there are simpler, and equally effective equivalents in more common use. Fortunately I have a great on-line dictionary that served me well.
When I was younger I may have found writing like this entertaining, but now I find it less so. So go read the excerpt here
