More About the Author

Jane Pollak is a living example of how to turn a passion into a thriving business. Now a successful entrepreneur, public speaker, author and business coach, Jane launched her business career in the unlikely field of egg decoration!

With a Masters from Columbia University Teachers College, Jane taught high school for a short time. What started as a school project became a passion for pysanky - the Ukrainian word for "eggs which have been written on." Jane's artistic flair and attention to even the smallest detail allowed her to perfect her craft. However, there were times when the challenges of part-time entrepreneurship, while raising a family of three children in suburban Connecticut, required real tenacity and perseverance.

Jane's story is an odyssey that led her from remote crafts fairs and customer rejections to an invitation to the White House and appearances on NBC's Today Show. National publications started featuring Jane's artwork as early as 1985, when her patchwork quilt eggs appeared in Country Living Magazine. Since then, she has been written up by The New York Times and other prominent publications.

Once her youngest was off to school, Jane focused on developing her business while listening to motivational and business advice from the likes of Roger Dawson, Wayne Dyer and Brian Tracy. Her passion gradually shifted to coaching other creative professionals and helping them achieve greater success. In addition to being a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach, she offers a unique vantage point because of her success in transforming her art into a profitable business.

The lessons Jane learned along the way led her to share her story and give advice to struggling entrepreneurs, traveling the country (and beyond). Jane joined the National Speakers Association in 1997, and published her book, "Soul Proprietor: 101 Lessons from a Lifestyle Entrepreneur" in 2001, which offers practical advice on business, marketing and goal setting. The Small Business Administration named Jane the 2002 Home-Based Business Advocate for all of New England.

Jane continues sharing inspirational, yet practical, lessons with creative professionals. In addition to coaching, speaking and blogging, she hosts Remarkable Women events to give women networking opportunities to encourage and motivate each other. In 2010 she re-released "Soul Proprietor" with updated lessons including how to pursue your dream during an economic downturn and how to use new technology to authentically promote your business.

100 Excellent Lessons November 4, 2001
Format:Paperback
Jane Pollak has captured the essence of being an entrepreneur. Through insight, candor and example she illustrates all of the ups and downs of building a business. Her format is an excellent example in simplicity. The lesson to be learned is clearly and concisely presented at the top of each page and then a real-life example is presented in the body of the text. I read it through, the first time,in just two easy sittings. It is packed with honest and straightforward samplings of events that every entrepreneur in any field of endeavor has (or will) encounter. This book is entertaining, educational and inspiring. I recommend it to any aspiring entrepreneur!

So many of us 'lifestyle entrepreneurs' work alone and are committed to following our passion(s) even when it is challenging and lacks financial stability (and even reward). We can't help it - we just have to pursue our dream!

SOUL PROPRIETOR: 100 Lession from a Lifestyle Entrepreneur is a great guide and reference for beginner and experienced entrepreneurs. Short, to-the-point examples confirm that it isn't just me who struggles with some of these issues and inspires me to explore my options and keep pursuing my dreams.

(In addition to this book, which I've recommended to many entrepreneurial friends, I also own the CD of this book. Great for trips, it is just good, solid information!)

By Janet
Format:Paperback
I loved reading Jane's book. She has a delightful writing style (and speaking style, for those fortunate to hear her speak) and she shares her experiences with wonderful wit and wisdom. Jane speaks and writes from the heart and clearly has interest in helping others benefit from her own experience and learning along the way. The book is written in a very readable and practical style, and any entrepreur can garner lessons from reading this book! You will likely find yourself smiling at many of Jane's stories as she so genuinely shares the ups and downs along the path to becoming an entrepreneur!
