5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Record October 18, 2011
By Loa
Format:Audio CD
I'm gonna start off by warning hard core emo fans to not even try to diminish the excellence of this record because its not FOB. Got it? Good!

This record is excellent. From begining to end Patrick shows off music talent that has be mostly dormant in the wake of his previous band. His vocals are smooth and melodic and the music is such a groove you dont even know you're jammin until you find yourself dancing around your living room. His lyrics are precise and meaningful to not only the things he's personally going through, but issues that are going around the world period. From tracks like "This City" to "Greed", he hits the points home that matter most to him.
He also explores not only his own naivete "Allie", "Explode" he also gives us inspirtational music to make us feel good "Coast" and "Spotlight". That's not to say he thinks he's perfect. In fact, the best songs on the record are his most personal like "The I in Lie" where he uses the metaphor of cheating to explain why this record didn't come out last year like it was supposed to. It's a stretch but a clever play on words and situations.

***Other honorable mentions***
Run Dry-Fantastic song about drinking too much and feeling the regret of the decisions.
Bad Side of 25- An amazingly honest song about his quarter life crisis.
Mad at nothing- Just so melodic and sweet, you just want to hear his voice
Everybody wants Somebody- Such a excellent song and an amazing groove.

The whole record is an amazing start to his solo career and I absolutely cannot wait to see him once he fully perfect his musical skills. He will be a force in the pop world for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise.... November 5, 2011
Format:Audio CD
Patrick Stump has undergone a lot of changes since his days as the reticent, yet soulful Fall Out Boy lead singer. He has lost a notable amount of weight and on his exceptional solo outing Soul Punk, Stump hones into his soulfulness channeling a mix of pop a la 2011 and Michael Jackson infused vocals. Sure he never outperforms the `King of Pop' (who could?), but he delivers and album that is well-crafted, indulgent, and creative.

"Explode" opens the effort exceptionally with an array of driving synths. Instantly, the Fall Out Boy fan can safely establish the fact that Stump works to differentiate himself from his band. The harmonic progression is well crafted and the bridge section provides a clever change of key and style. Not much to quibble about here, "Explode" is both a sound opener and a pleasant surprise. "This City" is another fine cut, firmly planted into an urban-pop style. Stump sounds incredibly soulful and the big refrain was made for his powerhouse vocals. Stump uses pop gimmickry, but he never overdoes it like so much of pop music does. "This City" proves to be a fine choice for a promo single. "Dance Miserable" provides yet another capable, infectious groove established from the onset. The drum programming is well conceived with the overall production being exceptional in all regards. The soulful, harmonized vocals may be the highlight, along with Stump's soul-laden vocal runs.

"Spotlight (New Regrets)" falls a bit short of the first three cuts, but still sits above par in the macro sense of things. The tempo accelerates here (a smart contrast) and the bridge section is a clear highlight by all means. "The "I" In Lie" is a slightly more satisfactory cut, with the `soul-punk' sound truly cultivated here. Stump uses both authentic and synthesized drums here, creating a nice timbre. The refrain is predictable to an extent, but Stump always captivates and amazes with his prestigious vocal gifts. "Run Dry (X Heart X Fingers)" is a bit of a juggernaut, clocking in at over eight minutes in duration. That said, the groove is as addictive as any other and the synths are lovely. The groove changes abruptly at around the 3:35 mark, but the change of pace is welcome. If anything, Stump achieves his goal to sound like Michael Jackson clearly on this cut. Still not as great as the three opening cuts, "Run Dry" is a worthwhile listen, regardless of its slightly exhaustive length.

"Greed" may be the first cut to give "Explode," "This City," and "Dance Miserable" a run for their money. The busy groove is one of the albums best and most infectious grooves. The production work is superb and Stump's rhythmic-driven vocals are SWEET. From a cursory listen, "Greed" instantly captivates. "Everybody Wants Somebody" is a downgrade from "Greed" but has features high points in its use of synthetic horns and harmonized vocals. The main quibble might be that the production is slightly overloaded and over-the-top, but then again, wasn't Fall Out Boy over-the-top itself? "Allie" cultivates a 1980s rock sound, a departure from previous cuts. Creative and infectious, not to mention Stump's grand falsetto, "Allie" blends the best sensibilities of rock, pop, and class soul.

"Coast (It's Gonna Get Better)" is a proper closing cut (excluding a bonus remix). The production work sounds like modern pop-R&B. The main quibbles might be that Stump's vocals sound a little quieter, in regards to production levels here. That quibble aside, a cut like "Coast" should raise the attention of many pop and hip-hop artists; in other words, they should bug the talent singer-songwriter about producing some tracks. Bonus cut "This City" features Lupe Fiasco stitching the track with a solid rhyme. While Lupe sounds as mature and alluring as always, Stump holds the track down just fine with/without the MC.

Overall, Soul Punk is a nice crossover effort that many will unfortunately sleep on. Incredibly gifted, Patrick Stump is a talent deserving wider recognition. Unfortunately, it seems Stump may be best remembered for his work with Fall Out Boy as opposed to a legitimate pop solo artist. Then again, the same thing may be said of Joe Jonas's excellent solo effort.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soul Rock October 18, 2011
Format:Audio CD
This new cd by Patrick Stump is contains a mix of songs that carefully craft the elements of rock and electronica. My overall favorite song on this cd is currently Coast (It's Gonna Get Better). This song appears to be a therapeutic message of staying self-confident regardless of what emerges in life. For me, getting this collection is a form of consolation due to the fact that his concert was already sold out in my area by the time I decided to try to get a ticket. I would highly recommend this cd for anyone that enjoys hearing his vocals and/or songs of the rock/electronica music genre.
