5.0 out of 5 stars I guess hip hop hasn't died afterall
Powerful loops, insightful & intelligent lyrics and good old fashion fun. This album showcases every aspect that real hip hop was meant to represent. 3.0 out of 5 stars nice but not monumental
this one was alittle difficult to review, i mean lyrics were pretty good, but at times the delivery was off, and at other times the delivery and the flow was on point and the beat was lacking something, whther he needed to chop in another sample or let the bass kick harder, it was just kind of eh.

Powerful loops, insightful & intelligent lyrics and good old fashion fun. This album showcases every aspect that real hip hop was meant to represent. It seems as though what the music industry considers "hip hop" today has really altered the definition of the culture, but 7L & Esoteric have truly kept hip hop's glory days alive and vibrant. Funky, soulful beats laid over DJ 7L's talented scratching make the foundation of every song on this album very strong. Particularly notable is "verbal assault", "operating correctly", and "guest list". Each one of these songs display the true talent that this very well rounded duo possesses. Included throughout the album is also a healthy dose of comedy (i.e. interludes and songs such as "guest list" and "jealous over nothing"), something that I personally miss hearing in today's thugish, ghetto-glorifying rap genre. 7L & Esoteric were seemingly inspired by KRS-one, Tribe Called Quest, old school Beatnuts and Tha Alkaholiks just to name a few. I highly suggest that you buy this album if you believe that hip hop should be about making clever lyrics accompanied with head bobbing beats. Check out Eso's flow on the mic, probably the best I've ever heard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing underground breakthrough, July 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Soul Purpose (Audio CD)
7L and Esoteric are like oreos and milk. They have been around for a little bit now, and this is their first album that they have released like this. They are not that well known, at least in the Chi. They both worked with others on the Jedi Mind album which was amazing. This album has some of the most creative hip hop cuts I have ever heard. 7L's beats sond like he went out on the street and listened for the most annoying sounds he heard and them put them together to make very excellent beats that flow perfectly. Then add the strong, distinct, crisp voice of the Eso on top of them and you have powerful music, enjoyable at anytime. This album is one of the best album's I have ever purchased. Just make sure you have your volume up, and your bass punding when you put this on. This team of Boston white boys is a match made in heaven.

4.0 out of 5 stars Actually 4.5 Stars, Hip-Hop For Real Heads, July 1, 2005
This review is from: Soul Purpose (Audio CD)
This is hip-hop for true fans of the art. It doesn't get any more dope than this! These guys will never be commercial, not that commercial rap is all bad, but this is REAL. Esoteric's rhymes will keep you hitting the rewind button! His lyrical style is comparable to Inspectah Deck's (which makes an appearance on this album) and Rakim's in delivery. Not saying he rhymes like Rakim, but just the way the words are presented in the multi-layered pattern within the verse (like Deck does also). This style may not be suitable for those who like simplicity. Eso delivers each rhyme like a punch line to the dome! His style is aggressive and witty, intellegence mixed with old school. This album has very few flaws. 7L's beats are incredible, seemingly too powerful to fly under the radar. This album is fresh, even as I write this review four years after the fact. Four years from now it will still be some of the best hip-hop around. After you buy this check out DC (Dangerous Connection) and DC2 (Bars of Death). Well worth it!

4.0 out of 5 stars soul purpose showed potential, June 7, 2005
This review is from: Soul Purpose (Audio CD)
This album is definately not as good as DCI and DCII but it showed 7l potential as a producer and esoteric's potential as a lyricist.

If you hear this album and then the aformentioned ones you can easily hear how 7l and eso have developed into a dope tandom.

The problem with eso on this ablum is that he eats his words so much that sometimes its hard to undestand what he's saying but he does rip it on a lot of tracks like My Rhyme PartII when he does a Run Dmc type of rap to an old eighties type beat

there a alot of fun tracks on this album to keep your head nodding and eventhough this isn't 7l and eso's best ablum it is still better than most other hiphop today

5.0 out of 5 stars British perspective, December 23, 2001
By
This review is from: Soul Purpose (Audio CD)
The production is deep and funky, fresh and innovative, 7L has produced the finest tracks on the album. For me, "Jealous over nothing" is one of the funkiest joints i've heard and is classic in my book, but "think back" (great piano loop) "verbal assault" and "public execution" also are tight. Esoteric's flow is one of the best i've heard and matches the beat flawlessly, it's just a bit of a shame that his lyrics are sometimes limited to macho posing, when they are not witty or profound. But i love this album for its neat, fresh production and i can appreciate almost every track on the album

5.0 out of 5 stars hip hop fan, July 24, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Soul Purpose (Audio CD)
If you like underground hip hop then this album is what you are looking for. Esoteric comes to the correct on his debut lp, while production is handled by the vinal reanimators and 7l. The guest list is also phat with inspectah deck, icon from jedi mind tricks, reks and apathy, and akrobat. Hands down five mic material.
