5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best
It's too bad that the collaboration between Bob Marley & the Wailers and Lee "Scratch" Perry didn't last longer. Perry's production here and on "African Herbsman" really showcases the hard edge to the Wailers' sound that was muffled by later more commercial releases. It's too bad that the collaboration between Bob Marley & the Wailers and Lee "Scratch" Perry didn't last longer. Perry's production here and on "African Herbsman" really showcases the hard edge to the Wailers' sound that was muffled by later more commercial releases. The raw sound of the band grabs you right from the start of "Soul Rebels," and Marley's soulful voice provides the perfect counterpoint floating above the churning rhythm. The R&B influence of the early Wailers remains strong on this album, and and these smooth harmonies provide a very unique combination with the knotty production. This album will constantly surprise you, and will keep you coming back for more long after you tire of the slick sounds of later Marley.

Please ignore the reviewer that claims that these recordings were stolen by Lee Perry. The albums to which that reviewer refers are the Trojan releases 'Rasta Revolutions' and 'African Herbsman', which are mostly repackages of the PROPER Wailers albums 'Soul Rebels' and 'Soul Revolution Part II'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure classic!, March 31, 2003
This review is from: Soul Rebels (Audio CD)
Trojan records may have dampered to much with this material through the years but this is the one to own. Remastered, inlayer notes by Perry scholar David Katz and delivered in a vintage layout, Trojan now clears out all errors from the past. All sins forgiven!

this is for the consumer interested in obtaining classic reggae. It features Bob Marley and the Wailers alongside Lee "Scratch" Perry in the early part of the Reggae revolution.
