Soul Searching Sun Review,
By Chris Kaetzel (Goshen, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Soul Searching Sun (Audio CD)
If you didn't know better, you wouldn't be able to tell this is Life of Agony. This CD is greatly different from all of their other stuff, but this isn't saying it's bad. SSS is really good, just different.Hope-This is a negative song, because although it's called "Hope" it's about how there is no hope. Still, a very good song. Weeds-This is a really good song. The first part is "IF tomorrow never shows I want you all to know that I loved you all, you're beautiful. And I had myself a ball" This song has some interesting riffs, how heavily it uses the mutes. Gently Sentimental-Here is where SSS starts to really not sound like LOA, with lyrics like "Mockingbird, mockingbird, translucent sea. Mockingbird, mockingbird, please come rescue me." Keith doesn't really sing through alot of it, it's kind of like a pre-Follow the Leader John Davis kinda thing, which is cool, but different. Tangerine-I honestly don't know what this song is about...haha. But, I do know that it's a good song, and it's very very soft. My Mind Is Dangerous-MMID is something like LOA has never done before. This, along with Hemophiliac In Me, are my favorite songs. This song is about negative thoughts, destruction, and chaos, but it's done in such a soft positive way, it's just so awesome. Neg-This song is very odd. "Love me and I'll love you so make love to me"? This song is about falling down. The drums in this song work really well though, and are the only thing, in my opinion, that keep the song entertaining. Lead You Astray-This is about Keith guiding people, I guess, how he feels is correct. It's basically a "you can trust in me" kind of thing. Heroin Dreams-This song is really good. It's about Keith's dad's heroin addiction. It's hard to believe that the chorus is "What the f**k you gonna do with the rest of your life?" because he sings it so casually and so seriously. I can't really convey it, you'll just have to hear it. This song is very, very good though. None-This is a negative song, but still very good. Although it's kinda abstract, it's still very good. It's about being insecure and sad, which is odd why they'd write a song about this, but whatever.... Angry Tree-This is an odd song, and it can be kinda annoying how the guitar only is played in the left speaker until the first chorus. But this song really does pick up and prove to be LOA-worthy, and the lead is really awesome, I love how it ends. Hemophiliac In Me-This is definintly the most catchy song on SSS. I'm not sure what it's about, but the music is so catchy it almost doesn't matter. Desire-This is a really good song, and I can relate. It's about how as soon as you think you have a good opinion on something, it changes, and it get s really frusturating. Whispers-This is what I get out of the song. It's about people that tear you down. Then it's also about how you can get to the point where you don't care who's fault it is for thing, you just blame everyone, and it's not really fair to them. I'm pretty sure that's what it's about. But, I'm not digging the last line in the chorus though, "Or you can say it to my grill"? And I'm pretty sure the last lyric in the song is "You spermed this jellyfish"? A very odd lyric indeed. SSS is definintly different from Ugly and River Runs Red, and unless you have a wide-minded view on music, you probably won't like this. But, since I'm a hardcore LOA fan, and I have a very accepting view on change in a band's style, I really dig this CD. I'd definintly check out some stuff online before buying this CD, don't trust the fact that you liked Ugly and/or River Runs Red, because they're really different.

upon find this cd(my local store deosn't carry alot of GREAT artist) on cdnow.com i was happy. i love life of agony. but then i read some of the reviews and it kind made me hesitate to pick up soul-searching sun. i decide to pickit up in started kicking myself for waiting. While its doesn't roar as much as River or just the stunning brillance of Ugly, soul searching sun is quickly becoming one of my favorite cds of all time. Not exactly the same musical heavyness, but the soul of life of agony is still the same. the lyrics..keith's voice. this is a great cd front to back. all life of agony fans should at least give it a try...i'm so happy i didsoul searching sun has hard rock feel to alot of the songs. but its some of the best song writing i heard since well the last loa record. it is a change from the previous two records but a refreshing change. hopefully now that the Core of LOA are back in action we'll get another dose of the agony. i

Don't judge a book by it's cover,

When I first bought this CD I was almost offended by how the sound had changed from LOA's previous efforts. I threw the disc in a corner and let it gather dust. One day I picked it up again out of pure boredom and gave it a listen. I found that you cannot judge any album by just one listen. I found the CD to a million times better than my first listen. The songwriting is excellent and shows how quickly the band progressed in that field since River Runs Red. "Weeds" especially is one of the catchiest tunes I have ever heard. In this time of(c)rap-rock true rock fans should be embracing bands like LOA. It always amazes me how the popular culture accepts talentless garbage like Limp Bizkit while bands that pour their heart and soul into their music get virtually ignored. In a perfect world bands like LOA would provide the soundtrack for the so called "angst" generation. Back to the review: Not as good as "Ugly" but still a worthy effort. To bad it is probably their last.
