5.0 out of 5 stars Has all the urban and adult R&B you could want
Keke is one of the more mature R&B stars, which will appeal to adult audiences. She's has got a nice beats to back up and a divine voice to match. My favorites are "Nothing In This World" featuring Avant and . I admit to having a lot of just fluff in my CD tower so "Soul Sista" added that touch I need. Here's my review of the songs:

Anyway, she asked my roommate and me to watch her cds and she told us we could pick one out for free. Ashanti was hot at the time, but not to me. I chose this one. All I have to say is that the sister can sing, but the album is rather mediocre. The only good songs are:

Nothing In This World--duet with Avant. These two compliment each other's voices really well. This is their second duet. This song whenever I play it has automatic repeat status.

If Only You Knew--remake of a Patti classic. I love Patti's version, but I think this one is an adequate tribute. Patti's is softer and smoother, but KeKe hits those notes

Don't Take Your Love--sort of uptempo. Has a decent hook

The lyrics could be better on other songs, but it's worth a listen.

2.0 out of 5 stars WAAAAAAAAAAAY TOO AVERAGE!!!!, April 1, 2002

After hearing "My First Love," I eagerly awaited this debut's release. I remember trying to explain to my friends who she was and harrasing the employees of all my surrounding music stores trying to find out when her cd would be released. It's been about 3 months since I finally got a hold of it and needless to say, I'm quite disappointed.

Let me start off by saying that every song on this cd is listenable and not one is horrible; the problem is that nothing on this cd catches your attention or differs from the regular everyday song you hear on the radio. Listening to this cd was like listening to 45 minutes of jingles for commercials... that's the only way I can explain it. The lyrics are very AVERAGE, the production is very AVERAGE, and even the vocals are AVERAGE (sometimes below average). It would be worthless for me to do a song by song review... there wouldn't be much to say. The only song that stands out from time to time is "If Only You Knew," but even that's lackluster compared to the original. I'm not sure who to blame for this dud, but hopefully it's not Keke and hopefully she will learn from this mistake( and others) and come with something w/ a little more substance and soul the next time around.

This debut gets 1 star cause it has to and 1 for being listenable... but that's it. If you're looking for something w/ substance, check out India Arie's debut... now that's what I'm talking about!

... I don't think its her, it the material that she had to work with. Somebody with great vocals, should be singing songs where they can show off a bit. I think she's a terrific singer; but other than "Nothing in this world", she doesn't really get a chance to shine. Too often we go out a buy a CD because of that one good song on the radio and end up disappointed. Trust me, you'd be better off buying a single this time.

My favorites are "Nothing In This World" featuring Avant and . I admit to having a lot of just fluff in my CD tower so "Soul Sista" added that touch I need. Here's my review of the songs:

1. Used To Love - A kinda in your face "I'm doing fine so pack your bags and leave" Definate highlight in the CD. 9.5/10

2. I Don't Wanna - The background and the general vibe remains me of Alicia Keys' "A Woman's Worth" It doesn't fully hook me but I usually leave it on. 7.5/10

3. Nothing In This World feat. Avant - The whole reason I bought this CD. Keke and Avant blend great together. Hooked me the second I heard it. 10/10

4. Don't Take Your Love - A smoothing melody and background violins accent the song in a nice way. 8/10

5. I Can't Wait - Iressitible beat and killer verses. The chourus doesn't do much for me but doesn't take away from the song. 8.5/10

6. Push Me Away - Doesn't pick up right away, it gets better with time though. 7/10

7. If Only You Knew - Remake of a Patti LaBelle song, I think it serves it much justice. 8/10

8. Talkin, About Love - Mellow-out song, the song flows all the way through, the bridge in the song is what makes the song one of the best ones. 9/10

9. Bad Boy - Even though I love the beat, they need to turn up Keke's mic on this one cause you can barely hear her over the background. Dispite, this song is another one of the best adding attitude to the CD. 9.5/10

10. Call On Me - I wouldn't have ended the CD with this song due to it being a little too weak of a ballad to finish this CD off. 7/10

Keke Wyatt has got the 3 basics: Vocals, Beats, and Appeal. The CD makes artists like Brandy and Tweet look like child's play. You'll enjoy this CD if you like artists like Faith Evans, Avant, Jaheim, India Arie, Aaliyah, or Mary J. Blige. Keke has got a lot of things going for her so this album deserves a spot on any R&B fan's CD case.

1.0 out of 5 stars "Nothing in This World" could save this poor cd!!!, January 25, 2002

When I first heard Keke Wyatt on Avant's 2000 single "My First Love" I, like many others was impressed with her powerful vocal on the track. While I did not eagerly await a release from her, I was pleasently surprised when I saw her video for "Nothing in This World" which also shows Keke giving a stirring rendition of Patti LaBelle's hit "If Only You Knew". That alone made me go and listen to this cd. By this time I was very excited. But I was immediately let down. While she definitely has the chops to be one of R&B's celebrated singers, the overall production of the album is lacking. The songs which I mentioned above are the only ones worth hearing. Download them. But save your money on this cd. Pick up "Aaliyah" or "Faithfully" instead. I name those two because those women have both talent AND great songs. I fear that the only reason some are listening and purchasing this album now is due to Keke's recent yuletide scandal.

Disappointed,
A Would Be Fan

4.0 out of 5 stars KEKE HAS SKILLS & GREAT PRESENCE BUT "SOUL SISTA" SHOULD'VE BEEN LONGER!!, June 28, 2005
This review is from: Soul Sista (Audio CD)
LIKE IT OR NOT SHE HAS SOUL ALONG WITH A GREAT VOICE... HER & AVANT WERE SUPERB NEW-COMERS!! I LIKED THEIR CHEMISTRY TOGETHER ON AVANTS' "MY 1st LOVE"! IT DIDN'T MATTER IF KEKE WOULD'VE CREATED "IF ONLY YOU KNEW" OR RENEWED IT FROM PATTI LaBELLE SHE STILL DELIVERED (NO MATTER WHAT SOME SAY)! *THE TITLE IS SIGNIFICANT BECAUSE SHE PRECISELY HAS SOUL & SHE A SISTA (SO WHY NOT)!
*LISTEN 2 HER SONGS NOW & YOU HEAR WHAT I WROTE 4 YOURSELF!!*

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, March 6, 2002

This review is from: Soul Sista (Audio CD)
This CD left much to be desired!! I purchased this CD because of her two tracks with Avant, My First Love and Nothing in This World. However, after listening to the whole CD, I immediately wanted to return it. She sounds like she was holding back from singing as well as I think she can. And in my opinion, her remake of Patti's If Only You Knew, was an insult. She should have left that song alone...

4.0 out of 5 stars Great listening, March 1, 2002
This review is from: Soul Sista (Audio CD)
I only heard 3 cuts from this cd, Nothing in this world, the re-make of Patti Labelle's If only you knew & Used to love me. I immediately ran out and brought the entire cd. I fell in love with the soulful voice of Keke Wyatt when I heard her on Avant's, My first love. Her voice is just another reason why I love r&b. I like the entire cd. She sings with feeling and a whole lot of soul. I just added her to the list of my favorite artists, which include Aaliyah, Faith, Mary J. Blige, Janet Jackson, Melissa "Missy" Elliot and so many more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good first effort, November 20, 2005
This review is from: Soul Sista (Audio CD)
Keke Wyatt's first album was very well done. Most of this album consists of ballads. I like Talkin' Bout Love the most and the soulful If Only You Knew. The reason I'm taking one star off to make it three stars is that sometimes the songs are too identical, that thump-thump-thump of Steve Huff's production so evident. Did Steve just go "thump-thump-thump--that's a wrap, next song, thump-thump-thump--good, next song" when he recorded Keke's album? I say that since Huff produced three different R&B albums in 2001-2002 for Avant, Sparkle and Wyatt. Entire albums of those three! And sometimes Keke's songs could have fit on either Avant or Sparkle's albums when you think that Huff produced some 30+ songs of nearly the same kinds of rhythms and beats. Sometimes there's a blandness to some of Huff's monontonous thump-thump-thump ballads that doesn't work for Keke. But Keke's strong singing outdoes whatever weak spots Huff provided to the project.
