5.0 out of 5 stars "His best in years"
Nelson Rangell may have one of the hottest contemporary Jazz selections out with "Soul to Souls". Not since his "Always" has he been able to put together a package that flows so well from song to song. 5.0 out of 5 stars "His best in years", May 5, 2006

Nelson Rangell may have one of the hottest contemporary Jazz selections out with "Soul to Souls". Not since his "Always" has he been able to put together a package that flows so well from song to song. He begins this package with a rendition of the Crusaders' classic "Free As The Wind" which is done in good taste but is a softer sax than Wilton Felder's. That is followed by what may be the best cut, "City Lights", a soft midtempo number showcasing his range on the saxaphone. There are also some very nice ballds here with a rendition of Earl Klugh's "Vonetta", Stevie Wonder's "Send One Your Love" and the cut "When I Saw You". All are tunes done in Nelson-like fashion with wide ranges of the sax displayed here. His flute is also evident in several numbers here especially on "Send One Your Love". One impressive change on this package is the use of some background vocalists on several cuts that blend in well with the sax and flute. Overall, this is a well put together package that can capture any smooth jazz listener and keep their attention from one song to the next.

I've loved Nelson's playing since his first CD. I've bought every CD since, and never been disappointed. He's first rate and so is this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doesnt Get Any Better, April 14, 2006
This review is from: Soul to Souls (Audio CD)
Nelson still has his touch. His music is in a category of its own.Alot of the time smooth jazz is called that for the simple reason that the music is what pushes the artist not the artist itself. The unique thing about nelson is that his skills and music go hand and hand ,not one is more than the other.Thats what makes him so awesome.

1.0 out of 5 stars Curse of the Rippingtons, September 8, 2006

This review is from: Soul to Souls (Audio CD)
It's sad Nelson was my favorite sax player up until about his last 3 or 4 cd's. It seems that he as well as bands in the same type of so called Jazz. i.e. the Rippingtons have run out of song ideas, have been using drum machines, drum machines for what they call Jazz, sorry drum machines and Jazz. Every song the same tempo, variations on there other songs. You want to hear Nelson at his best listen to his older CD's espcially the songs with Dennis Chambers on drums. I guess these guys look at Kenny G living in Malibu, and not having to use any creativity, again i.e. not writing his own music, but just copying an old song. Music has gotten so bad now, that people actually accept this. It's sad.
