Book Description

January 29, 2004
What is the purpose of the spiritual desert - those times when you feel distanced from your dreams and goals? This is your chance to discover meaning in the dry places. Mike Pilavachi, leader and founder of the Soul Survivor youth movement, has touched and inspired thousands with his message that the desert is ultimately a place we should desire to be. Like a crucible, the desert burns away all of the waste in our lives, giving way to pure character and humility, Only when we come to the end of ourselves and our desire for independence can we come to the beginning of God.

This review is from: Soul Survivor: Finding Passion and Purpose in the Dry Places (Paperback)
In his heart-searching book, Mike Pilavachi brings to mind an issue that contemporary Christians do not want to address because it is one that involves one of man's greatest fears - pain.

The spiritual desert according to Mike Pilavachi is a spiritual place where God takes us to purify and refine us for the purposes and plans he has for us. Physically speaking, this spiritual training could take years and is centered around the emotional, intellectual and mental states of the individual.

The book soul survivor was written to let Christians know that with all the prosperity teaching going on in the church today, that the desert is the place to be and should be desired by all Christians. It goes on to explain with biblical backups that it is in the refining pain we undergo in the desert that we find God's purpose and plan for us, that we learn to persevere and that we go on a deeper level in our relationship with Christ. The desert is a place with no distractions, few oases and a place where the sun bakes our skin. It is a place therefore, where we learn to completely depend and lean on God.

On a more personal level, this book had at least one bombshell on each page for me. It opened my eyes to a lot of things, made me cry and made me laugh because I was just going through what I can now safely describe as a desert experience when I first held this book in my hands. I related with every page in the book and even the author himself. There were several times I kept saying to myself "I thought I was the only one who knew this!". I was really glad that I was not alone in my struggles with my walk in Christ. It gave me loads of comfort.

Packed full with nuggets of wisdom from someone who has been there and learnt from being there, this book has a message: the time between moving from one level of glory with the Lord to another, is the desert experience. It is a time of pain and suffering - usually not physical pain, the kind people get to see, but emotional and mental, the kind people can not see and find hard to understand and relate to. You can't go from one level of relationship with Jesus to a deeper one, without passing through the desert.

This book is a light easy read with so much wisdom for young Christians and is also packed full of enlightenments for older Christians.
