4.0 out of 5 stars Urban Fantasy with an Upstate New Yok Twist
Rootes creates, or shall we say, relives his realistic Upstate New York adolescence-coming-of-age in his first novel Soul Takers. His work exhibits the energy of a new writer with the seasoned abilities of an old pro. The way he puts a spin on the old vampire tales, blends it to an erotic, romantic, sensual, suspense thriller is really an unique accomplishment indeed...

3.0 out of 5 stars Sensual, Erotic Fun
A name comes to mind when I read into this book. Marquis de Sade. But Robert Rootes isn't as outright as the Marquis. Robert is more refined, less vulgar. Still I think there is the touch of sexuality within the twisting romances. I wasn't sure if he was writing a romance or an erotic vampire horror novel. There is a lot of stuff like Laurell K. Hamilton in it, but there...

Rootes creates, or shall we say, relives his realistic Upstate New York adolescence-coming-of-age in his first novel Soul Takers. His work exhibits the energy of a new writer with the seasoned abilities of an old pro. The way he puts a spin on the old vampire tales, blends it to an erotic, romantic, sensual, suspense thriller is really an unique accomplishment indeed. The characters are real. We can feel for them. We are are left wanting more. I can picture this being a critically acclaimed movie with all the bells and whistles special effects that would probably be a flop at the box offices. Oh, well. The true artist is intrinsically motivated. Rootes has learned this by now, no doubt. Soul Takers is definitely a good read. And now we know where all of the Missing Children go........

5.0 out of 5 stars Soul Takers, July 27, 2002
This review is from: Soul Takers (Paperback)
Soul Takers is a book that you want to continue reading. It is a book that draws you in and creates each character to be a living person in your mind. It leaves you wanting more.

Robert Rootes has successfully created a story that brings all emotions to the surface. He will horrify you with how dangerous vampires can be. He will introduce you to, "The family," which is very mysterious. You will learn to love each and every one of them for their individual personalities. He will bring you to the true ugly truth of what man can be like and then bring you to the joy of what a loving family is like with all of their mistakes.

To miss reading his book is like finding out that you missed the movie that everyone is talking about! My only hope is that I can convince this talented writer to do a series from this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Than Just a Kiss, July 24, 2001

I found myself pulled into the characters of this book. The story line is very original and keeps you turning the pages. The author is extremely clever pulling all the characters together later in the book. He creates a character in Michael that you come to hate and a character in Jordan you come to love. The love that develops between Jordan and Psyche is created in a sensual, tender manner that isn't tasteless. The reader can feel what the characters feel. The author creates a new phenomenon with soul takers and the deep, drawing kiss. The taking of another life isn't depicted as gory, but as a need to creat immortality. The final showdown between the soul takers and the vampires leaves you on the edge of youe seat. A must read. I am looking forward to his next book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Captivating and dreamlike, July 21, 2001

I think he draws you deeper and deeper into the novel until your completely lost in it. I believe that under the heavy sexual content is desire and passion beyond what ordinary people could ever imagine it to be like. I think that the book has a very good and holding storyline. The characters are each captivating in their own way. I cannot wait for more intense reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Read!, June 13, 2003
This review is from: Soul Takers (Paperback)
I found this book to be an incredible journey in the minds of the lives characters. I love erotic, sensual tales of vampires, but not gory. The story was definately not gory and I liked that. I love the way you feel as if you put the book down you'll never know what happens next. He draws you into their lives and his thoughts. He's very enthralling and great with imagery and words. I would definately reccomend this book to all those who enjoy good sensual/romantic novels. I can't wait to see what happens more with Jordan and Damian.

Still I think there is the touch of sexuality within the twisting romances. I wasn't sure if he was writing a romance or an erotic vampire horror novel. There is a lot of stuff like Laurell K. Hamilton in it, but there are a lot of things that are original too. I love the way these beings take the soul and not blood. But the vampires are there too. It's an interesting mix and makes it a great read. So why three stars? I think the type setting is a little off. But that's not his fault. If you can overlook that and get into the story I think you will love it. Give it a look.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end. It was a story that I didn't want to end! The characters are very well written, the plot took me places I didn't expect and the premise of the novel is something so different. I look forward to Mr. Rootes' next novel with great anticipation. You should definitely check this one out!

I've already requested Mr. Rootes to write sequels and prequels to this book. It's sexy, has horror, drama, suspense and more! It had me worried for characters right to the end. I want to read more!

When I think of the book SOUL TAKERS I really think of the accomplishment. It didn't really take that long to write and I think the story flows well enough for you to follow. Some might think it would be very dark, maybe too controversial,or even erotoic, but I like to think of it as FICTION, or as some would say, an Urban Fantasy. I tried to keep the period of the book very general, but I think you might get the impression that it's dated for the late 80's early 90's. If you guessed that, you might be right! But all in all, it's a great read. It will give you something to do while spending your time at the laundry-mat waiting for the dryers to suck all the quarters out of your pockets. I really hope you enjoy it. Thank you for buying it.
