This CD is a good value. It combines two old Curtis Fuller albums. He is a great player. The only drawback is that the Cabin in the Sky album has some syrupy arrangements. It seems like a lot of the hard bop players adopted the style of playing in big composed arrangements later in their careers. I just don't like that style.

I just came across "Cabin In The Sky" on Bob Parlocha's overnight jazz show and was blown away by that session, which was produced by Manny Albam, one of my favorite arrangers whose work in the fertile NY studio scene is unparalelled. "Soul Trombone" is an extra-added attraction for this release and like Curtis' other recordings is - like Curtis himself - a treasure. You can't go wrong with these sides if you're into the hard bop era of the late 50's and 60's. We're blessed that Curtis is still with us and recording from time-to-time.

Curtis Fuller is one of the very best on his instrument. Matched with an array of guest artists, Impulse has produced a very good recording. Too bad the liner notes are so tiny as to be illegible.
