I've read many books on the spiritual life but Doug Rumford's Soulshaping was the best. Our entire church staff read this book together taking one chapter a week. We all loved it and found Rumford engaging, insightful, theologically solid, and down-to-earth practical. Along with helping the reader to put spiritual disciplines into practice, Rumford assists the reader in doing honest self-assessment. This book needs to go into reprint. It deserves the attention of anyone who is serious about nurturing the inner life with God.

Douglas Rumford gives a comprehensive, but simple, path to spiritual growth. I found the book most helpful and have used some quotes and concepts presented in the book to help my friends along their spiritual journey.

"SoulShaping" as the title suggests, focuses on the follower of Jesus Christ nurturing his/her own soul for continued spiritual growth. Many of the disciplines covered include:1. Silence and solitude (this was my personally favorite chapter) 2. Prayer 3. Reading the Bible 4. Fellowship with other believers 5. Serving in a local church and the community 6. Dealing with temptation 7. Fasting The book is around 460 pages but is an easy read and you will find yourself reading several pages at a good pace. The narrative is simple but not simplistic and you will be encouraged and challenged to grow in your personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Recommended. |
