Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Los Angeles interior designer Balbes begins his helpful first book by describing the eight SoulSpace stages and how a modest interior renovation can make major changes in an individual’s life. Rather than meander from room to room, the author uses his clients as true-life examples in each one of his stages. Keeping a never-worn wedding gown, for instance, hampers one woman’s personal growth; a comment from Balbes epitomizes his philosophy about that problem: “If it is beautiful but makes you feel lousy, let it go.” He points to the power of positive thinking through objects; his partner Jason, once a Broadway actor, reconnected with his award and begins realizing success. Balbes also advocates maximizing the kinds of items and events that transform a living space, whether it’s the creation of a mood board, the answers to an interior’s issues (like noisy neighbors or low-lighted areas), or the celebration of a space meant to live and love in. --Barbara Jacobs

“Xorin’s expertise and thorough insight allow us to understand the importance of creating our own personal SoulSpace from the inside to the outside. His process enables us to transform, progress, and evolve in our journey of life.”
— Jo Frost, parenting expert and author of Supernanny

SoulSpace is about more than how we decorate our homes; it’s about how we care for ourselves.”
— from the foreword by Marianne Williamson, author of The Age of Miracles

This book is thoughtful, engaging, provoking and compassionate. It helps point the way to real change, through something as simple and seemingly superficial as home design. BUT NO! This book presents interior design as a catalyst for personal change and transformation, on all levels - physical, emotional and spiritual. I am only about halfway through, as I have not yet been able to let go of some of the objects that I have assessed as needing to be released. But I can see how holding on to some of these things represents holding on to the past in ways that are weighing me down and holding me back. I am almost ready to move on, and am now gearing up to let some of the old relics go!

Xorin,
I just purchased your book from Shullers book store and I don't just
like it- I love it. I am a frustrated interior designer. Frustrated
because I am so tired of "formula\]" decorating with mass merchandised
accessories....bored out of my mind as a matter of fact.
Your book spoke to me because I grew up in a family that was poor and
crippled by the illness of my father and brother. I know what is
Really important in life and what is not. So imagine trying to meld my
Skill and talent for design with that world view! My career has put me in
Many different circumstances- merely proving that people are alike no
Matter their social status. I've come to feel that just stuffing a house
Full of well matched pieces isn't really making a difference to anyone.
Then, when I needed a message the most I found your book and what I heard
was that the person and the space are the starting point of the design,
vs. the design coming from an impression I create in my imagination of
what the space should be. Suddenly- the challenge is back, and the
challenge is responsible, client conscious design. Thank you!

This book quickly gets to the heart of what we are searching for in our homes. We all want to live in a home that truly reflects our personalities and makes us want to come home after a long day. The only complaint I have is that there are zero pictures inside the book. I longed to see some of the rooms Xorin talks about. That said, I couldn't put it down. I read the entire book in one day coming up for ideas I wanted to incorporate into my home.

I have been lucky enough to experience some of the locations that Xorin Balbes has transformed. For years he has shared these spaces with charities for fundraising events. You cannot show up and not be inspired. After reading this book I really understand the magic "soulspace" it takes to make our lives extraordinary. This book takes "fung shue" to a whole new level. Every one should read this if only to understand how important our living spaces are to our lives, our families and our guests. WOW

I just finished interviewing Xorin on the Angel Quest Radio Show. All I can say is that I can't wait to make the changes in my home that he was recommending!
SoulSpace is a great book. This quote from his book says it all, "It isn't about the four walls that surround you; it's about the energy with which you fill your space."

Soul Space by Xorin Balbes is a unique perspective of transforming your home that blends design techniques with psychology and spirituality. The eight stage process is fully manageable and when used, can transform your home and your life in ways you probably couldn't even imagine before you started the process.

Soul Space is perhaps one of the best (if not the best) books I have read about organizing, decorating, and creating a peaceful home. It is a bit ironic that I read this book while contractors were at my home working on the damages caused by a water leak. It definitely wasn't peaceful in my home while the work was being done, but reading this book then was really the perfect time to actually do all of his steps in the Soul Space process - just on an increased and rushed timeframe.

My family and I were in the forced to assess and release stages on many areas in the home, but continued to do those beginner stages with the rest of the house as well. Even though the house is not finished yet, and we're still working on all of the stages, this book was the perfect reminder and friendly push I needed to let go of some things and enjoy my Soul Space.

I passed this book on to my Mom who is also going through all of these renovations, and normally it takes her awhile to read a book. This one she started reading and found it extremely inspirational (especially since we're doing the stages right now) and she had many "ah-ha!" moments when reading it. She almost has it finished, and each time I see her reading it, she always has something to say about it and how she is going to use it to help with the process we're going through now. I've told her many of these suggestions before either of us read the book, but Xorin does a better job expressing it than I did.

This is an absolutely fantastic book! It's well-written and engaging and the client stories are so easy to relate to. Personally it has been an eye-opening experience to read this and I am working on the different stages to create the space that nurtures me.
