Book Description

May 14, 2001
Soulardís Second Century embodies the spirit of the past. Through tales of travel from distant lands searching to fulfill the American Dream, to laughter shared within the walls of a tight-knit community, Betty Pavligeís oral history takes the reader on a journey back in time to Soulardís rich past. ÝÝThis is history as it was lived, in the words of the woman who experienced it. The neighborhoodís famous market, travails of work, and the bonds of friendship encompass these pages filled with memories of a century in Soulard, St. Louisís historic neighborhood. Betty Pavlige has combined images from family albums with a tremendous number of her own personal tales to document the changing times in Soulard. Her vivid and poignant voice weaves together a tapestry of everyday life, and chronicles what is was like to grow up in Soulard.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unreadable, March 10, 2007
By
This review is from: Soulard's Second Century (MO) (Voices of America) (Paperback)
This is one of the few books I've ever returned. The publisher should be ashamed for allowing the book to go to press in this manner. It is unreadable. The grammatical (and spelling) errors are so plentiful that I had to reread sentences constantly just to get the author's meaning. The subject (Soulard) is something that interests me so I tried for about 20 pages. Alas, I had to give up. It's really astonishing how poorly written it is. I'm surprised it was published. There's nothing else to say really. If you think I'm overstating this, simply check out Amazon's page-views and you'll see for yourself.
