I saw the video for "The Worst" and fell in love with the song, so I took note of the artiste, Jhené Aiko. I found out she is one of the artistes to watch out for in 2014 so I've been on the lookout for her debut album.

And here it is. "Souled Out" is a woozy psychedelic R&B affair with heavenly strings, delicately caressed keyboards and soft guitars perfectly showcasing her feathery vocals, dreamy and floaty like the cover art. Retro, yet futuristic sounding.

"Limbo Limbo Limbo" is a dewy ballad with gentle Hip Hop beats, sparkling flourishes and squealing guitar. Similar is the enchanting "To Live & Die" featuring Cocaine 80s and the lyrics "We live by the love, die by the love". The trippy "It's Cool" has a Jazzy lilt.

The album is even paced and it's really tough to pick standouts when the songs are so strong, but other favourites are "Lyin King", "Wading", the more upbeat groovy "The Pressure", the quivery acoustic "Brave" with skittery beats (and lyrics telling her man he is brave to love her, a woman with "scars on my heart"), the piano-driven "Eternal Sunshine (with vinyl pops to add to the retro feel), the affecting acoustic ballad "Promises" featuring her daughter Namiko (inspired by her late brother Miyagi - who also features on the song - and produced by Norwegian Electronica duo Röyksopp), and the Jazzy "Pretty Bird (Freestyle)" (with freeform lyrics, sporadic shards of guitar, and an outstanding appearance by Common).

The deluxe edition has two additional songs, the lovely acoustic "Remember", and the spectacular "Blue Dream" from which you will not wish to awake. "Don't wake me up cause I'm in love with all that you are" she croons against an atmospheric backdrop. Sheer bliss. This song is indescribably beautiful. The Target edition has two additional bonus tracks, the dreamy acoustic "You Vs Them" and "Beautiful Rain", Soul with a Folk/Pop vibe. I'm totally "souled" on this album, a classic!

Jhené Aiko's first full-album release doesn't disappoint those that have followed her, yet appeals plenty enough for mainstream listeners in her own way. This album can be listened as a progression from a "dark to brighter place" from beginning to end, with her voice and melodic production. Aiko's voice is truly mesmerizing and her song choices all reflect well-collaborated decision making. The album lacks a "club-banger" for better or for worse (I'm siding with the former) but the song choices follow a theme as if you're listening to an entire mix of soulful music with a rhythmic beat that'll keep you entranced throughout, whether it's a refreshing wakeup-call or soothing lullaby. The snares and strings production-choices strike a solid balance of soulful and carefree.

Personal favorites are uppity "Lyin King" and the melodic "Spotless Mind" and "Eternal Sunshine," as well as the singles "To Love & Die" and "The Pressure." Aiko features her daughter and late brother on the song "Promises" that's very well-written and quite endearing.

The wait is over and I couldn't be more in love with this album! This is the 1st album in years that I actually went out and purchased! Jhene Aiko is simply amazing, I've been following her since day 1, she's definitely come along way! Her music is such a breath of fresh air, it's timeless! If you enjoy relaxing, chill, laid back type music, I HIGHLY recommend this album!!

Still completely enchanted with "Sailing Souls" and a CD of "Unreleased" tracks, Jhene is easily my best new discovery in 2013. I wondered who she was when I saw "Sailing Souls" hit #1 on the iTunes R&B album chart....I decided to take the plunge and buy the EP. I have been anxiously waiting her full debut ever since.
And here it is. It seems so off base to classify it as an R&B artist/album because though she is soulful, she also fits on alternative radio stations too.
After enjoying so much of what I have been able to discover on Jhene, here finally is her album debut. And it has fulfilled all my hopes and more!!!
"The Pressure" jumps out from the pack. It opens up with a very soulful rhythm and a killer opening line, "I care about you Baby, Baby more than you'll ever know". A very simple line that she delivers with sensual confidence. It made me sit up and say, "you go on girl!!!" It made me playback at least 5 times.
The couple of reviews that have brought the album the 5-star rating given by all the other reviewers reveal a certain level of incomprehension. I, too, didn't and still don't condone this being classified as R&B. But after numerous intimate listenings, the soulful rhythms and her phrasing can be interpreted in several ways. And the questioning of its digital-based sound is also baffling......after all this is an artist who's work organically grew from a digital reference point.
"Eternal Sunshine" opens up with a oh so sweet tickling of the Ivory keys leading into a beautiful, dreamy atmospheric ingenue that is an important quality in my attraction to Jhene "Eternal Sunshine" is a wonderfully romantic song....sung by someone who is deeply in love and does not take for granted just what a blessing that is. And it ends with haunting sound bytes from her deceased sibling and her little daughter..

I absolutely love jhene and I would rate this album as being overall likable but I wouldn't put this album as a A+. If I had to compare this one to her last album...I would say that she has definitely fell off or moved down the totem pole a bit. This album is very lax lyrical wise compared to her last. The beats are very nicely laid on each track but....I feel that on some songs she could have did better lyrically or went in a little harder on a strong beat. On some of the songs, it seemed to me as though she had a lot of fillers to either make the song longer or just to transition to the next subject. The song "caged bird" starring common starts out pretty well until the song get further and further to the end and jhene starts to sound like a annoying screaming bird but I guess that would be her definition of how a caged bird would sound if it wanted to be set free. Maybe? I don't know. I just think that long notes are not fit for her tone of voice. I would categorize this album as being in the same section as Corinne Bailey Rae due to the fact that everything is pretty much lyrically Mellow-toned. I also feel as if she didn't pour her heart out on this album like she did her last. I liked absolutely every song on her "sail out". On souled out, I like @ least 7 songs. I can say that she pretty much had a mix in the subjects in which she was singing about which were family ( daughter) and the motivation to keep going and her previous relationship treatment. She has definitely lightened up on her profanity too.
