I believe this is Albert's first album released in the states; not aware if he has released previous material in his native Brazil. I am very impressed with this outing. I listen to a fair amount of music, primarily jazz/instrumental (all subgenres), so I was already familiar with bandmates Kenny Garrett on sax, Peter Erskine on drums on several tracks, and Jimmy Haslip on bass. Simply put, this album jams with intelligence-it cooks, not just to showcase the talents of the players, but to me the song writing is strong as well. The band seems tight, as if they have been playing together for years. Also, I have heard an alternate version of Albert's tune "Samba City" on youTube and it's hot! His tone is clean and fluid; he's got the chops for sure, but he gives everybody room to stretch out to a degree. If you listen to contemporary jazz, give this a try, I don't think you will be disappointed. For my personal tastes, his next albums are not as vibrant, not as energized, especially 'Vertical', that seems to be the direction he wants to go-having said that, the song writing seems to be just as interesting, it's just that, since I drive a semi for a living (what, a trucker who doesn't listen to county?!?), I like stuff that has a little life in it!
