Dynamic problems, but lovely, lovely sax and vocals,

This review is from: Soulful Song (Audio CD)
First the good news --Steve Wilson plays a mean sax. And Rene Marie, a fine jazz singer, lends her vocals to this album. I am particularly fond of Rene Marie, who can be found singing on a number of albums on the Max Jazz label. And Steve Wilson plays sax the way I like it--soothing, sweet but with an edge now and then to spice up the mix. Here's the bad news--The volume range on this CD is all OVER the map--soft, LOUD, mainly loud when Steve Wilson is soloing? The balance seems off to me, and I had to constantly adjust the volume setting on the stereo. A flaw that could easily be fixed in a remastering. If you want your sax solo loud and clear, however, this would be a plus. I was annoyed. |
