Biography

With 1971's What's Going On, Marvin Gaye was responsible for arguably the greatest soul album ever made. Following that socio-political commentary, Gaye morphed into a crooning lothario for Let's Get It On and songs like "Sexual Healing", before his tragic death in 1984.

Marvin Gaye's life was always informed by his experience as a child craving the affection of his authoritarian father. Whatever… Read more in Amazon's Marvin Gaye Store

2.0 out of 5 stars Another unnecessary rehashing of Marvin's Columbia years, August 11, 2010
This review is from: Soulful Sounds of Marvin Gaye (Audio CD)
I'll make this review quick.

From 1982 to 1984, Marvin Gaye recorded for Columbia. He had a bitter divorce with Motown in 1981, after they finished recordings without his consent and released them as an album. Gaye signed a three-album deal with Columbia Records that year, moved to Europe to try to recover from his massive drug addiction, and in the process, recorded one of his best albums, 'Midnight Love,' released in 1982. That contained the hit single 'Sexual Healing' as well as other minor hits like 'Third World Girl' and 'Joy.'

Gaye was shot and killed by his father in April 1984; Columbia and Motown teamed up to release two albums full of unreleased material: 'Dream of a Lifetime' (featuring Marvin's final recordings and several outtakes from his 1970s Motown years); and 'Romantically Yours' (a ballads album containing various ballads he worked on from 1965-1979). Both, in my opinion (and despite what the critics say) were strong compilations full of archival material (I don't even classify them as studio albums, because in reality, they aren't).

'The Soulful Sounds of Marvin Gaye' is yet another rehashing of 10 songs from his three Columbia releases. Sure, every song here is great. But the fact is, this has been done before. 'Playlist: The Very Best of Marvin Gaye' is a far better option if you are seeking a Marvin Gaye Columbia years compilation, considering it contains almost everything here as well as some rarities and hard-to-find tracks. Seek out that one instead.

Or, if you are prepared to, cough up some money and buy the three Columbia albums. All three are very good, and though 'Midnight Love' and 'Romantically Yours' are available here on Amazon incredibly cheap, 'Dream of a Lifetime' is starting to become somewhat of a rarity. I ***STRONGLY*** recommend taking this route.

I don't recommend this disc. It's yet another collection recycling Marvin songs that either you already have or you can easily get elsewhere. Unless you are on a extremely tight budget or you are an easily pleased Marvin fan, stay far, FAR away from this.

NOT RECOMMENDED.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great work from the Master himself, December 9, 2004
This review is from: Soulful Sounds of Marvin Gaye (Audio CD)
This is why a lot of people wouldn't buy his posthumous releases just right after he died. I was born the same year when his father shot him twice a day before his 45th birthday in 1984. I didn't even get a chance to see him, work with him or whatever. 'Cuz he's truly an inspiration I admire the most. Yeah he's been gone 4 20 years now and he still rocks on in this compilation.

This is recommended who wants to hear more about the late Marvin Gaye who put out great stuff. I don't care if ya'll like him or not. 'Member my dad said he never makes a bad song ever, but keeps the way it suppose to be which I call "real music" or pretend is "more ol' school or soulful".

Yeah Marvin's is bad, you know what I mean.

5.0 out of 5 stars They Don't Make Artists Like Him Anymore!, May 17, 2004

I'm telling you...

You can hear a Marvin Gaye song over and over again and never get bored...

And in this album which is possibly a diary of Marvin during his last years alive, it can be seen as a concept of sorts or even a new album despite the showing of "Sexual Healing" and some of the songs from the Midnight Love album but it also provides some of the session work for that album plus some songs recorded while Marvin was still a Motown artist (of course some of the songs here were featured on the records, Romantically Yours and Dream of a Lifetime--albums released a year after the Prince of Soul's passing).

All in all, it's a brilliant record with a mixture of soul singing, preaching, poetry, jazz, reggae, classical, funk, R&B and soul itself...

Marvin Gaye is forever the King! NUFF SAID!
