Sir Cliff Richard is my all-time favourite living singer. (Elvis is of course always be the King!). He is 75 year old “evergreen” singer from UK, still going strong after all these years. He still holds the record as the only artist in UK with at least one Number 1 song in FIVE different decades (50s-90s). Although Cliff is much less popular in US, in UK, he is tops, with an astonishing 136 charted singles! He has also sold more records (21.4 million in UK) than Elvis (21.0 million) and Beatles (20.8 million), according to the Virgin Book of British Hit Singles. Being a loyal Cliff fan and a completist, I am glad to say that I have every domestic release of Sir Cliff from 1958 to now!

Soulicious is Cliff’s 2011 release. He now releases one album per year, usually at the end of the year, to coincide with his tour. I really enjoyed his 2010 effort Bold as Brass, because I am very familiar with all those oldies from the 30s and 40s. He even had a blu ray release of his Bold as Brass concert, which I bought from

Soulicious is an album of 15 mostly new and some classic soul songs, mainly produced by legendary Motown songwriter Lamont Dozier, with some tracks produced the soul legends the late Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson. On this album, clffi duets with some of the greatest voices in soul music, including Freda Payne (remember Band of Gold), Roberta Flack, Percy Sledge, Billy Paul, Peabo Bryson, Deniece Williams and Brenda Holloway. In his sold-out concert tour in November 2011, the special guests included Lamont Dozier, Freda Payne, Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr., James Ingram, plus Percy Sledge. I am still waiting for a DVD (NTSC) or even better, blu ray disc of that concert. In UK, the DVD format is always PAL.

I must say that Cliff is not afraid to try something new. He had great success with his Two’s Company: Duets album in 2006. The main difference, besides this one containing soul tunes, is that the songs chosen for this album are not the most familiar ones. So, it takes a little longer time to get used to these different tunes. But Cliff did a marvelous job. His voice is still “Golden” that you will recognize instantly. The audio was remastered extremely well. When Cliff released his Complete Singles Collection box set, a new digital remaster for each song in the catalogue was redone to near perfection. Since then, all the later releases carried the same high quality of audio.

Cliff Richard is like an evergreen tree. I will continue to support him. Besides audio, I also have many of his concert on DVDs. I also have more than 50 VHS tapes of his original concerts in the 50s to 70s that I can convert to DVDs when I have time.

Finally, Soulicious is a great album that shows a different side to Cliff Richard. In the past decades, Rod Stewart and Barry Manilow were singing a lot of old ballads. But Cliff was doing it already in the early 60s. If you are looking for Cliff’s hit singles, this is not what you want. But if you want to collect Cliff Richard’s albums in his illustrious career, this album is highly recommended.

Soulicious by Cliff Richard has him doing what he does so well. He frequently stretches himself to reinvent his image as a pop star, and offers something new to stay current. This CD has him teaming up with many soul greats and entertains us well. Particular favorites are Saing A Life with Freda Payne, Do You Ever with Brenda Holloway, Teardrops with Candi Staton, Every Piece Of My Broken Heart with Valerie Simpson, This Time With You with Candi Staton, and by himself Don't Say You Love Me. Cliff Richard fans, and soul fans will like this the most.

Cliff Richard is a British national treasure for his many albums, singles and good deeds. Add to that list "Soulicious," his crossover R&B/pop album. Tempered duets with Candi Staton, Dennis Edwards and other American R&B stars show off his smooth voice once again, singing songs mostly penned by a Dozier family member (Holland-Dozier-Holland wrote many of Motown's biggest hits). Most of the songs here are winners, but a couple were done better by Elton John on his duets album. Fans should note that Cliff offers one solo number here--"Don't Say You Love Me (It'll Ruin My Day)." Well worth buying.

Have been a Cliff fan for years. This album has many great tracks on it. It also shows his continued growth as a singer. Willing to try new styles. His voice is still amazing.

This is perhaps Cliff's best CD in many years. A few songs: Saving a Life; When I Was Your Baby; I'm Your Puppet; Always and Forever are songs that should easily be at the top of adult contemporary charts. Several others add a gritty soulful strength to the CD. The more I listen, the more I enjoy it. Saving a Life, the opening song, is one of the finest we'll hear all year. For the legendary British singer who has been performing for more than 50-years, this is a great achievement. The unfortunate thing about it is the American music public has never embraced Cliff on a sustained basis (although he remarkably has had U.S. hits in each decade beginning in the 50s). If you appreciate great music, buy this CD.
