Product Description

Shawn Mullins ~ Soul's Core

Review

Mullins displays Beck-like range, spiking earthy music with modern sparks. But his greatest gift is gab, as evidenced in spell-binding yarns like "Gulf of Mexico" and "Twin Rocks." -- USA Today

Although the radio stations have been playing Lullaby off Soul's Core over and over and over -- I never get sick of it. Like Lullaby, all of the songs on this album reach deep into your heart and soul; everyone can relate to something on this album. And Mullins himself has a voice and a style that has not failed to melt my heart. I haven't found anyone who disagrees that it's he's the sexiest artist around.

I love music and it very rare that something grabs me as this cd did. From the opening noteit is pure lisenting pleasure. My favroite cuts are twin rocks orgean and Billy Joe McKay. Mullins tells a story as someone twice his age.

Shawn may have gotten his start touring coffeehouses and bars, but he ain't a just another folk singer. His style is an amalgamation of rock, folk, blues and country.
You've probably heard the single "Lullaby" on your local radio station, but don't stop there - the rest of the album is DEFINITELY worth a listen. From the sing-songy "Lullaby" to the spoken word "Twin Rocks, Oregon" (which quasi-chronicles a day in the life of his coffeehouse/bar circuit years) to the excellent cover of Kristofferson's "Sunday Morning Coming Down," "Soul's Core" is packed with wonderfully-written songs and good music.
Shawn is an incredible storyteller, and his music complements them well - like the driving rhythm of "Tannin' Bed Song" and the slower "Gulf of Mexico" and "Ballad of Billy Joe McKay."
If you can't get enough of "Soul's Core," consider working your way back in the SM discography - get "eggshells" and "Big Blue Sky" and, if you can find them, the "Jeff's Last Dance" CDs (with Matthew Kahler).
One more thing - Shawn's CDs are great, but you hear a different sound and intensity you see him play live, so check your local concert listings and get out from behind that computer!

I buy a lot of music. A lot of it is OK. This album, though, is my favorite album of the year. I saw Mullins open for the Indigo Girls at Dartmouth College early in 1998, and he was one of the best opening bands I've ever seen. "Soul's Core" is a very deserving album: "Lullaby" is an awesome song, but the struggling folksinger is still alive and well in Mullins. "Twin Rocks, Oregon" is a great, honest song; "Gulf of Mexico" is a solemn recount of a regretful life (reminiscent of Bob Seger's "The Ring"). And I dare you not to be hooked by the explosive ending of "And on a Rainy Night" or the catchy "September in Seattle." Recommendation: Strong buy.

Shawn Mullins' first major-label release, "Soul's Core", drew me in from the first song, and never let go. The power of his rich, soulful voice, backed up by only his guitar and the occasional accompaniment of other instruments, combine to create a beautiful backdrop for his honest, emotional lyrics. From the forlorn romanticism of the first track, "Anchored in You" to the hopeful, inspiring "Shimmer", this CD is a must-have for anyone has ever loved or been hurt.

A voice that melts in your ears and songs that are catchy but not annoying, Mullins blends vocal talent with beautiful melodies and storylike lyrics. He sucks you in and holds your attention throughout the entire album, each song complimenting the others yet holding their own. Highlights are the overplayed "Lullabye" (which is a great song when it isn't on the radio all the time) and "Soul Child." Another must-hear is the final track. Worth the price and then some.

This CD is one of the best! The way he tells his stories from within is great! The first time I heard "lullaby" on the radio my girlfriend and I were having some tuff times. I went out and bought the CD and we sat and listed to the whole thing! We found truth in just about every song that deals with todays living. I would recomend this CD to anybody! This CD is one you have to have in your collection, period!

I heard Shawn Mullins on an interview at a local radio station. He played "Lullaby" in the acoustic studio, and I literally had to stop my car to listen closely! I haven't heard this range of singing ability since back in the early 70's when Dan Fogelberg put out "The River". This one is phenomenal, folks. He will rocket to fame, I just know it!
