2.0 out of 5 stars I tried December 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I tried to read this but I soon gave up. The very poor editing was just too distracting. I think the premise is a good one. Obviously it intrigued me, but every time I started to get interested, some weird capitalization or punctuation error jarred me right out of the story. I have so much else on my Kindle to read that I gave up and deleted it from my Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another winner! May 31, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Mackenzie Brown is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. He has another winning book on his hands. The Book of Souls is a story about Imelda and the secret she and her father share. A secret of hidden powers that have been passed down through the generations. One night Edward, Imelda's father, disappears under strange circumstances. Imelda starts to look for him by following her instincts like he taught her. She finds him in all places, an old well. Every night at midnight she goes to talk to him, trying to help him get back home. Then he disappears all together. This a story of a daughter trying desperately to save her father's life, as well as her own. But the danger for them and others is fierce. Janus, a lizard like creature is out to kill them and their world. It's a little Alice Through the Looking Glass meets Harry Potter meets The Lord of The Rings. You will meet Merlin, Gulliver, a werewolf like man named Bek and a load of others. There is sorcery, magic, bravery, and just good old brains and common sense used. It's intrigue starts from the first page to the last. Loved, loved, loved this book. Do yourself a favor and read The Book of Souls. You won't be disappointed.

The Book of Souls (An Imelda Stone Adventure)
Written by Mackenzie Brown

Reviewed by R. Murry

Imelda Stone's adventure kept my attention for two reading sessions, which is a rarity. I try to pace my reading to understand the flow of the story for a least three to four. However, Mr. Brown's prose captured me with writing that kept my attention.

Two akin souls, Imelda and Edward her father, venture into the world everyone dare not go into - the world of the unknown, where your spirit captures your imagination.

They are out to preserve each other's souls, unlike that of conforming to that of human beliefs, and the concept of redemption for the world salvation - The Book of Souls. In their endeavor they must traverse and enter into the unknown, using their moral and intuitive abilities to survive.

For me to explain all that is overcome by the two main characters, I would have to give away the plot. All I will say is that Imelda with faith and love follows her father into the non-plausible by jumping into a well which represents the unknown. She does this with such devoutness that she is able to recruit friends to help her fulfill her goal - bringing her father home safely.

Edward on the other hand has his purpose, which is to keep Janus, most likely the devil, from capturing The Book of Souls. This would strike a negative blow to humanity - the devil having the control of the souls of the world.

He recruits no other than Merlin, by happenstance, and a strong intelligent man by the name of Bek. These two icons contribute to Edward's effort is unintelligible, but effective to the cause.

Imelda is the linchpin, who in the final act overcomes her fears and adversity to become one of the perfect souls in The Book of Souls by saving the day. Her soul is what we all should try to attain.

A must read for soul searchers and lovers of overcoming the impossible.

More About the Author

I was born and raised in Liverpool and from an early age I have always enjoyed making up stories. I'm interested in many genres but I would not complain if I was referred to as a thriller writer. I enjoy writing fast paced stories that intend to grab the readers attention from the start.

To date, I have completed four novels, two of which are as yet unpublished - but another (a re-edited and re-formatted version of The Shifting) will hopefully be released before the end May 2013. With the advent of e-books I have decided to take a deep breath and publish my work in e-book and paperback format and I am currently writing a sequel to The Shifting, I call The Burning and a series of detective stories set in Liverpool of the 1940s, featuring PI Vic Prince.

My personal hero is my grandfather Angus Mackenzie Brown, because he always lived his life with dignity despite what life threw at him, including incarceration in a Prisoner of War Camp in Italy, from which he escaped and lived to tell the tale.

My latest release is 'Lost Boys'. Delbert Walsh a world famous retired detective, yet borderline alcoholic; is on the hunt for a serial killer in 1970's Liverpool.

I'm happily married and have two fabulous daughters.

I'm happily married and have two fabulous daughters and quite simply the coolest cat in the land - Snoz!
