Souls Of My Sisters is an innovative tool that encourages and empowers women to take charge of their lives, specifically in the areas of health, love, spirituality and family. Using a number of essays from a broad range of women, some icons and others lesser known, readers gain insight into the despair that has haunted them as well as the highs they have experienced in overcoming their various obstacles.

Readers gain a true sense that everyone has similar struggles. The path to self discovery that the authors encourage readers to embark upon, by asking the question, "Who am I?" encourages exploration within one's own soul so that we might learn from others and ourselves and not repeat our mistakes. Souls Of My Sisters is a powerful, life changing book that will encourage many African-American women in particular to become more focused, broaden their horizons and achieve all the success that awaits them.

Kudos to Dawn Marie Daniels and Candace Sandy on an outstanding job on their first publication. I look forward many more publications by them.

A friend of mine gave me an advance copy of this book and I literally couldn't put it down. It was filled with stories of love, pain, survival and success. There were stories on everything from love of parents, dealing with illness, date rape, the death of loved ones and so much more. There is a story to touch practically every situation that women have to deal with. Some of the stories left me in tears, others left me with the an exhilarating feeling. My thoughts were "Wow, if she could overcome that challenge, there's no way, I can't overcome mine". I give kudos to Candace Sandy and Dawn Daniels for taking the time to address and place "medicinal salve" on the souls of myself and women. I highly recommend this book and suggest the women pick more than one for Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah or "just because" and give it to a friend or loved one. I also recommend giving this book to a brother, lover or husband because this book definitely gives insight on women, their strengths their ability to survive and hold things together no matter what. In closing i'd just like to say, pick it up, pick it up, pick it up! This book is for women of all color and creed.

The unifying theme here is, you are never alone; we all have been down that road. Regardless if it was caused by the atrocities of our heritage, the turbulent times we see right now or the unforeseen uncertainties of our future as a people. All of the roads lead toward one particular factor, which helps us make it through these uncertain times...our own unrelinquished beliefs of and or the grace of God. Even if you don't have a set belief, you don't need to. If you want to be preached to, then this won't be your cup of tea. However, it may help to fill that void in your life. This is a collection of real experiences, anguish, hurt, reflections, memoirs, love and spiritual journeys of all forms. This book offers a diverse group of black women from all walks of life; such as Mary J. Blige, Kym Hampton, Rosalyn McMillian, Felicia Middlebrooks and other unsung heroines. If you have ever felt that sneaky feeling of worthlessness or self doubt, or you just sat alone in the dark and wondered why? Why is this happening to me and where do I go from here? Then let this book be your guide towards the collective healing process and learn to fully understand and love yourself. Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, pondered this same question until she came up with this answer: "...Because I am here for a reason and every day I still learn good reason to answer my question: Why me?"

I was so pleased when Ivy Simmons, a contributor to this book and one of my Spelman sistah girls informed me about the book signing and forum held this past Friday. I was truly impressed to see a handful of those contributors there at Spelman College on this past Friday evening.

I thought this would just be another one of those "black women books" that fall victim to shortelling the real struggles of our sisters. Needless to say, my preconceived notions were erased and I was truly estatic to be there to witness true greatness. I have read several of the stories and already, I feel rejuvenated and refreshed.

I highly recommend this book to all of my sisters and brothers too. Often times, our brothers don't truly understand all that we go through (as we may not understand their struggles either). This is a good reference and indepth look into the lives of various women. I especially recommend this to our younger sisters!

I extole congratulations to all of the women of Souls of My Sisters and applaud their efforts. A special thanks to my Spelman sistahs of the Class of 96', Ivy Simmons and Tara Centeio.

I'm a 21 year old African American woman and I picked up this book at my campus bookstore. I started reading it and could not put it down. I had been looking for something that I could relate to and this was exactly the book. It took me through a range of emotions and eventually brought me to a better place. It was like I had lots of aunts, cousins, grandmas, and moms giving me advice. I'm buying one for all of my friends this Christmas.

Our book club hosted a retreat in which this book was assigned. This book is highly recommended for one's personal library! The selection of authors/essayists in this "anthology" on life according to the African American woman is superb! I applaud Daniels and Sandy for the collection of writings and for organizing a book that African American women can identify with. Bravo ladies! -LC

This book was the best, motivational sista to sista book I have EVER read! This will be my Christmas gift to all my family and friends! This book moved me to become a better oriented adult in my life and marriage! I LOVE IT!!
