About the Author

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (February 23, 1868 August 27, 1963) was an American civil rights activist, Pan-Africanist, sociologist, historian, author, and editor. Historian David Levering Lewis wrote, "In the course of his long, turbulent career, W. E. B. Du Bois attempted virtually every possible solution to the problem of twentieth-century racism scholarship, propaganda, integration, national self-determination, human rights, cultural and economic separatism, politics, international communism, expatriation, third world solidarity." Du Bois graduated from Harvard, where he earned his Ph.D in History; later he became a professor of history and economics at Atlanta University. He became the head of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1910, becoming founder and editor of the NAACP's journal The Crisis. Du Bois rose to national attention in his opposition of Booker T. Washington's ideas of accommodation with Jim Crow separation between whites and blacks and disenfranchisement of blacks, campaigning instead for increased political representation for blacks in order to guarantee civil rights, and the formation of a Black elite that would work for the progress of the African American race.

It was a great book. A book that should be required reading in schools, from elementary, to high school. Like all good books I had to read it twice to make sure I did not miss one single thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Human Soul Is Here March 27, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This work is a classic American storya and is like a sequel to Frederick Douglass' writings. It is one of those books that is important for understanding where we are in America today. Du Boise style of writing is wonderful. He brings truth to light with a gentleness without anger but with a love for life and the land of his birth. It is like one of those torches that is passed from one generation to the next and the light from the torch never seems to dim. He makes a case for the importance of government for those who are without power or the resources of the wealthy. Like Frederick Douglass he writes the truth as he sees it without damaging his own soul with hatred for anyone. Du Bois is one of those foundations from the past that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood upon in order to move to the next chapter in our American experience of equality for all. He writes truth withou bitterness and shows us his own soul along the way. He writes about the human soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still relevant today. September 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Du Bois wrote these essays at the beginning of the 20th century but, we find at the beginning of the 21th century the condition of the black and brown Americans in dealing with white supremacy is still pretty much the same. Even with a black president??

4.0 out of 5 stars READ-To KNOW-To GROW July 14, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A good read; personally think DR. DuBois is overrated by the Black intelligentsia, as he fought hard against fellow anti-racists who were instrumental in combating the horrific sin/crime committed and still being committed against people of hue(s) to this very day!

That being said, the book should be read along with other books relating to his biography, e.g. his relationship to what became the N.A.A.C.P. etc.
