More About the Author

My academic degree is in composition and arranging, which tends to influence my writing style toward the practical applications of technology in music. I get a big kick out of hearing from people who have been helped by my books. My aspirations in Junior High and High School were to become a recording engineer, so I read every book and magazine I could get my hands on. However, if I would have had someone tell me the stuff I write about today, when I was young, I would have been light years ahead in my early career.

Directly out of college I taught music in a college in Seattle for three years. I decided I would rather get out and do music so my wife (who I met while teaching college) and I formed a band and traveled for several years playing shows, clubs, and bars all over.

I taught recording classes for about 10 years while performing, which is where I began to develop a number of pragmatic explanations for complex recording tasks. Much of the material for my first books were a product of teaching these classes. In 1991, a buddy (Bob Sluys) and I produced "Killer Demos: Hot Tips and Cool Secrets for the Home Multitrack User. This video sold pretty well and started the machine in motion that would end up with my first book for MixBooks in 1996. Mike Lawson, the GM for MixBooks built a great library, which he ended up purchasing from Mix Magazine to start Artistpro.com. For Mike and Artistpro, I wrote several more books along with a complete online course, with online graded tests. Artistpro was eventually purchased by Thomson Publishing in Boston. Mike was acquired with the deal so I still work with him directly to build new tools for recordists around the world. So far, with Mike's help and my family's patience I have written more than 30 books about recording at the same time that I have produced many albums for Seattle artists.

I am currently with Hal Leonard Publishing. They represent the best in the publishing world and for me, the perfect culmination of a long road in the publishing business.

3.0 out of 5 stars A few good ideas for beginners, but overpriced, January 17, 2004
This review is from: Sound Advice on Mixing (Instantpro Series) (Paperback)
This book is moderately helpful, if a little thin. This is not a 40-pound tome with facts and charts and cross-references that you will keep next to your mixing board; but it will get you thinking in the right direction and actually has some pretty important stuff to say about EQ, delays, limiting, and the sequence for setting up your mixes. The included CD is useful for demonstrating the effect of the techniques he is talking about, and in fact the CD is the only advantage this book has over others of its ilk. Personally, I recommend The Mixing Engineer's Handbook (Mix Pro Audio Series) by Bobby Owsinski, which is everything this book isn't.

My main beef is the price of this book in relation to the content. It is a thin book already, but it is also written in large (16 point?) type and has a LOT of white space, so it's really more of a pamphlet that was expanded into a "booklet," and it doesn't contain a ton of details about what to do with each instrument, vocals, etc. (like the Owsinsky book I recommended above). In reality, if I boiled down the useful bits from this book I could probably have told you all of them in the space of this review. So if you find it for under $5, I would say grab it. Otherwise, I would go see if I could get a copy from the local library or else just go find much of the same information online.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor book, October 29, 2010
This review is from: Sound Advice on Mixing (Instantpro Series) (Paperback)
This book is 75 pages of large font and double spaces type. It simply does nothing to help any reader understand anything about mixing audio. It glosses over every subject. For example, mixing drums has five sentences devoted to it. This is incredibly bad. I do not recommend anybody read this even the complete novice. Bad. Bad. Bad.

2.0 out of 5 stars Informative for raw beginner only, January 2, 2006

This review is from: Sound Advice on Mixing (Instantpro Series) (Paperback)
I read this "book" and listened to the CD with sample mixes in about a half hour. It seems fine as a primer for a total beginner (which I am) but leaves you feeling more like you just read a magazine article than a book. It gives you a few ideas but just doesn't develop them to any depth. I haven't read the author's other works, but maybe if you slapped them all together you'd get a decent book out of it.
