About the Author

Dr. Chris Idzikowski, BSc, PhD, FBPsS, is Director of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service at the Edinburgh Sleep Centre. A leading expert on sleep disorders, he has served as Chairman of the British Sleep Society and the Royal Society of Medicine Forum on sleep problems. He has also sat on the boards of the European Sleep Research Society and the US Sleep Research Society. He is the author of four books, including Learn to Sleep Well (Watkins).

Format: Paperback
As a psychologist, I have found that sleep problems of one kind or another are reported by most people who come to my office. I already had five sleep books on my shelf when I found this book at the library. It is simply the most thorough, practical, and up-to-date treatment I have seen of the subject. The chapter on Sleep Hygiene (creating the ideal conditions for sleeping well) is worth the price of the book. The chapter on the Science of Sleep is informative without being overwhelming, as is the chapter on medications. The information ranges from common problems to serious sleep disorders. All the stages of life are included, from children to the elderly. Guidelines are included for workers, parents, and students. My only criticism: while there is helpful information on sleep problems in pregnancy, the information on menopause is quite limited and brief. This is the only reason I am not giving the book five stars. I would recommend A Woman's Guide to Sleep by Walsleben and Baron-Faust for more extensive coverage of women's sleep issues.
