"Let me eat cake! I'm a rock star!",
This review is from: Sound Bites: Eating on Tour with Franz Ferdinand (Mass Market Paperback)
This is one of most entertaining foodie/travel/memoir books I've read in a long time! You don't have to be a fan of Franz Ferdinand to read this--it's a very worldly, witty, thoughtful collection of impressions about food and life, life on the road, restaurants around the world, and more. Kapranos also shares food-related stories of growing up in England and Scotland (where he was a chef before becoming a rock star). Highly recommended!

so the guy from franz ferdinand tours the world and writes about what he eats. but it's more than that, it's not just the food, it's the atmosphere, it's the thoughts and feelings the food and atmosphere conjure up. it's all there. each "chapter" is no more than two pages, a quick sampling, but in those two pages, you get a feel and a taste for a place, for a moment of time. it's fun, funny, occasionally poetic, and even comes with a list of addresses and phone numbers of the restaurants talked about in the book.
so worth your time, a definate buy.

A Very Good Read!,

I'm not much of a non-fiction reader nor a foodie, but I absolutely loved this book. It's storytelling with detail so eloquent and vivid that it feels like a good friend is taking you to experience these places. I couldn't pull myself away! I was completed surprised. I bought the book because I'm a fan of Franz Ferdinand and I enjoy hearing or reading Alex's interviews. He really knows how to pull you into a story. This isn't a book just critiquing food. It's a full on story following somewhat of a timeline with entertaining flashbacks to his childhood in Glasgow, London, and Greece and experiences as a chef in Glasgow. Everything is there, the good the bad, the absolutely disgusting. He writes about fast food joints all the way up to 5 star digs. It's across the board entertainment. I couldn't recommend this book any more.

Even if you aren't a fan of Franz Ferdinand you can enjoy this book. Filled with quirky and original takes on eating around the world. Alex Kappranos does a great job with narration and description of his food adventures while touring. A great read for the casual reader looking for something that's not to serious. This book will put a smile on your face and might even inspire you to try new foods.

I bought this book as a music fan, but after finished reading it, I realised that Alex Kapranos is a decent writer as well.
I hope he writes more in the future.

You would never expect a rockstar to write like this. Not saying we should hold celebrities at lower standards, but this book is above and beyond works of many professional food critics.

I had anticipated reading this book for a few years...I am extremely satisfied with the work the lovely Mr.Alex Kapranos has done. He is not a foodie or food critic, but yet he makes food sound so intruiging. Especially the cakes...I got hungry more than once reading this book and the illustrations were very good and entertaining, big thumbs up to Mr.Andy Knowles.
This is the first book I have ever read under this category, and I'm "hungry" for more. Maybe under my circumstances, you should enjoy it as much as I did.

This collection is great for people who are into food, but not "foodies". I.e., people who would be just as happy finding the best banh mi in town as eating in a 3 star restaurant. MFK Fisher he's not, but if you like trying new food as part of a life-long adventure, you'll enjoy these stories.

Alex Kapranos' Sound Bites is a great collection of food essays Kapranos penned while on tour (mostly) with Franz Ferdinand. These little essays are tasty little tidbits with a twist. Kapranos' approach is unexpected and maybe a little twisted. The essays are delightful and this collection, while slim, will provide you with a lovely afternoon or two of reading. Enjoy.
