The Late Great Clarence White Lives Again In MLPS Format!,
By
This review is from: New Sound of Bluegrass America (Mini Lp Sleeve) (Audio CD)
Ever since I can remember as a kid watching old reruns of "The Beverly Hillbillies" I have always loved listening to good, fast banjo-playing and guitar flatpicking and even watching "Deliverance" years later hasn't dampened my enthusiasm one bit! :-) I actually got this because I wanted to find out more about what all the fuss was about one Clarence White who was held out as among the greatest flatpicking guitarists who ever lived all those years ago when I was first learning how to play the acoustic guitar. I managed to find a cd of him jamming at home which was good but ultimately not as satisfying as this great cd of him playing along with the Kentucky Colonels. Not only do you get to hear Clarence but you also get the lot with great banjo, national steel guitar and standing bass playing as well as vocals. The sound quality is surprisingly good for a 1962 recording and the master tapes have clearly deteriorated somewhat but it is still admirable how they managed to eliminate most of the hiss but there are still various sonic imperfections that are more or less obvious on certain tracks. You also get good vocals on this cd as opposed to my first encounter with Clarence on his homemade recordings.
Fans of old style country and especially of Bluegrass instrumental playing will love this album and as far as mini-lp replica sleeve (mlps) releases go, fans and collectors are in for a treat here! They've done such a great job here that even the cd looks like a vinyl complete with track dividers and raised grooves! Although the sound quality is patchy which is mostly unavoidable due to the state of the master the mlps design is very good and very well put together making this among the best that I've ever encountered. Also included is a great colour foldout poster of the Colonels i.e. Clarence White, Leroy Mack, Roger Bush and Billy Ray which has all the lyrics on the other side. Excellent mlps design, good enough (as can be expected) sound quality and great content make this an easy review. Highly recommended!
