About the Author

The author has been a reading tutor for more than 20 years. In addition to teaching her own four children to read, she has helped many struggling readers become successful readers. While teaching her last child to read, she discovered that many other children were not getting the early skills instruction that would help them become strong readers. Combining the information from recent research about early reading instruction with practical experience working with students, she began to write lessons for the students she was tutoring. The lessons included stories so the students could practice using the skills they were learning, and the students quickly began to be successful. Over the past decade she has developed Sound Bytes Reading, a program that works well for all students, including those who have failed in other reading programs. Her carefully sequenced lessons have proven to help beginning readers experience immediate success and to help students who are discouraged from years of failure to discover the joy of being able to read well.

Excerpts

Story from Lesson 5-4:

SPOT

I can go to a shop.
I can stop at the shop.
I can have a dog.
I can have Spot.
Spot can sit in a box.
Spot can go to Mom and Pop.
Spot can hop. Spot can flop.
Spot can eat a lot.
Spot is a good dog.

Story from Lesson 12-1:

THE COAT

A white goat ran along the road. He had a coat on. It was as black as coal. "I wish it was not so hot today," said the goat. "I will roast in this coat."

The goat took the coat off. "I will soak my coat in the creek," said the goat. He put the coat into the creek. A little bit of soap was in the coat. The soap began to foam. Then the coat began to float. "Oh no," said the goat. "There goes my coat!"

The coat floated past a boat. A big green toad sat on the boat. The big green toad went, "Croak, croak," as the coat floated along.

The goat ran past the boat. He jumped into the creek and got his coat. "I am glad to get my coat back," said the goat as he went on his way along the road.

I have tried many, many reading programs through the years, and this is by far the easiest, most straightforward and BEST reading program I have found. Throw away the tears and busywork and teach your kids to love to read!

I was struggling with teaching my son to read. He was BEGGING me to teach him, I just didn't know how. This book really helped me, and now he is reading up a storm. The lessons are short and sweet, and he is so proud if himself. I love this book!

I bought this book for my 8yo who is a very reluctant reader. I'd say this book is pretty much foolproof! The lessons are neatly arranged, and the explanation in the beginning of the book is fun to read and informative. It has been a joy for us to read together, when nothing else has worked!!
I'm also using it with my 6yo who loves to read, and am slowly introducing it to my 4yo. None of them have become frustrated with the pace of the book, and they are all enjoying reading the stories. I let them lead in how much they want to read, and the 6yo is pushing the 8yo, who doesn't want to be passed!
