Encore album, as satisfying as the original,

It all comes together in a perfect blend - the soloists, the ensemble, and the arrangements. It's almost as if the recording sessions for Cortner's 2006 album Fast Track had continued and produced a second disc. Most of the players are the same, reassembled for sessions in October 2007, May 2008, and January 2009. The 11 tracks offer an assortment of jazz standards and new compositions, all with fresh Cortner arrangements that make them all sound brand new.Trumpet hero Marvin Stamm solos on every tune, giving him a chance to show off his stylistic range from soft ("Sometime Ago") to swinging (Cole Porter's "It's Alright With Me") to funky blues (Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island"). Check out the juice he pours into his solo in "Caravan." Other soloists who take full advantage of their opportunities to excel are Jon Gordon on alto, Dave Tofani on tenor, Jim Pugh on trombone, and Bill Mays on piano. As in the previous Cortner release, this album demonstrates that the art of the big band continues to evolve, and lets you experience that process with an hour of great music.

This disc received a very favorable review in Down Beat magazine and it indeed is confirmation that big band jazz is still a vital part of the jazz scene. Solid playing, great program and wonderful sound. If you like big band music, definitely add it to your buy list!!

Once again, Jack Cortner and Marv Stamm have a hit on their hands. The cuts are well written and well executed. This band is very tight and Marv performs his solos with outstanding technique and thoughtful musicality. I would recommend this album to anyone interested in first rate jazz and quality recordings. Consider getting their other album, Fast Track, as well.
