I have no words to describe how much I love Karukas music, the least I can say is that I own all of Karukas CD's and they make the best of my 600+ smooth jazz CD's, please listen to "You'll know it's me" and I promise you will know Karukas "succulent" music.

Shouln't Get Too Dependent On Vocal Songs,

If there's one element more than any other that gets smooth jazz accused of not being "real jazz", it's too many pop-ish vocal numbers. Somehow the fact that there's better-crafted instrumentals than usual behind the voice doesn't save it. There are a lot of smooth jazz artists who do almost entirely instrumentals, Mangione comes to mind. But a singer sets boundaries by relegating the players to the role of sidemen, and that's pop, not jazz. And Karukas skates too much on the edge of that. The first Karukas solo number I heard on a local jazz station was the title track, and the story of a nearby street sax player who affects a concertgoer to the point where he comes back outside to continue listening to him is a bit thin for a whole song, even though it's a well-crafted arrangement and melody. If I hadn't already been familiar with the Rippingtons, I would have assumed that Karukas was the singer. I really think that track could have stood on its own as an instrumental--in point of fact, the reprise at the end proves that. And Shelby Flint seems to dominate his material, well beyond her actual talent. I don't think Gregg Karukas split from the Rippingtons so that he could be her backup.

I bought this CD for one song, (as usual) so I was not disappointed when the other songs were so...... underwhelming
I enjoyed listening to Shelby Flint sing "I Keep To Myself." That did it for me. The four stars I awarded were solely for that song.
