About the Author
Foreword by Sheila O'Brien. The executive director of the New England Assistance Dog Service (NEADS), Mrs. O'Brien holds a master's degree in special education, and she has had wide experience in working with people who are deaf and in the training of Hearing Dogs.
Books by Elizabeth Yates have won many awards, including the William Allen White Children's Book Award and the Newbery Medal. In 1987, the New Hampshire House of Representatives saluted her with a citation for lifelong achievement.
While writing Sound Friendships, Miss Yates observed the training and matching of dogs at the NEADS facility in Massachusetts and interviewed both new and experienced Hearing Dog owners. Her story of Willa is based on the experiences of two young women whom she met through the NEADS program.

I read this book *ages* ago. Then I promptly bought a copy. This book is *so* good there are just not enough words. It made me feel sad, and glad, and noble and young all at the same time. The book is wonderful for anyone, especially young ladies who happen to like dogs -- especially golden retrievers. :-) Marvelous.

Great story for a child in about 4th or 5th grade but also informative to those who don't understand the role of a hearing assist dog. Don't know if the story was true but it was cute.

If you would like to know more about how service dogs can help their owners be sure to read this inspiring story about Willa and her dog. I had to finish this as soon as I could to find out what happened to Willa. I like believable happy endings:)
