Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine magazine's review July 1997 by Dr. Mark Rider

"In her new book, Judith Pinkerton, opens up the arts and science of music therapy to the public. This largely self-help text takes a comprehensive look at the whole medium of recorded music and teaches the average listener to sequence music together into multisong recordings for specific daily activities. Such activities include waking, sleeping, exercising, and driving. Pinkerton also addresses the use of music in resolving situational emotional experiences and briefly touches on pain relief. ...Pinkerton does make use of the professional music therapy literature in outlining entrainment techniques for the resolution of emotional events. This technique involves the use of music first to match to the unsettled emotion, then to soothe that emotion with different music, and, finally, to energize oneself with a third type of music. The author refers to the process of sequencing music according to the emotional states of unsettling, soothing, and energizing with the acronym 'USE.' The text is largely educative in nature. Pinkerton describes most musical styles in a historical and educationl manner. She points out many specific popular musical selections that would fit into any of the USE states. This helps the reader decide how to locate and record selections that best fit the desired style and use of the music. The author also includes a chapter of case histories describing how many individuals...have used specially chosen music to resolve intense emotional crises. This final chapter captures the essence of the book, which is to assist the average music listener in perpetuating a healthy, dynamic flow of emotions during everyday events -- from which many of us tend to become anxious, depressed, or sick. To this end, The Sound of Healing valiantly accomplishes its goal." Delve more deeply into learning how to USE music to improve health, 99% successful with cancer and other medical patients, at-risk teens, abuse victims, and any one stressed out who's been a child or a parent. 5.0 out of 5 stars "This fascinating book ...can be an invaluable resource.", October 8, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Sound Of Healing: Create Your Own Music Program for Better Health (Paperback)
Billboard Magazine's Review 6-22-96 by Trudi Miller Rosenblum

"In this fascinating book, music therapist/ motivational speaker Judith Pinkerton uses the strategies of music therapy to show how music can change one's mood. Of course, most of us have instinctively used music in this way at one time or another, such as putting on a favorite song to cheer ourselves up, but Pinkerton takes this idea further, explaining how to structure a program of music to most effectively dispel anger, calm the nerves, motivate oneself, chase the blues away, or even alleviate physical pain. Pinkerton discusses the basic components of music that affect emotion...and uses those components to categorize the mood of a piece: unsettled, soothing, sad, anxious, cheerful, angry, etc. Her theory is that to effectively use music one should first listen to music that exactly matches one's mood. Then, gradually as one changes the music, one's mood will change. ... Pinkerton offers many examples of music that fit each emotion... specific genres of music -- blues, gospel, soul, folk, country, new age, classical -- so that fans of each genre can get a wide range of examples of music they can use in structuring a personal music therapy program. ... this book can be an invaluable resource." The Sound of Healing book highlights the USE music therapy method that is 99% successful for a variety of populations, including cancer and other medical patients, abuse victims, at-risk teens (juvenile offenders), and any who gets stressed out who has been a parent or a child.
