Great band, so-so EP, December 5, 2008
This review is from: Sound of Home Ep (Audio CD)
Released prior to the self-titled 2003 debut album, the Sound of Home EP was intended to drum up interest in the full-length album as well as to introduce Pride of Lions to the world. Pride of Lions, of course, is an AOR/melodic rock band featuring former Survivor guitarist/vocalist Jim Peterik and newcomer Toby Hitchcock.
The title track of this EP, which is also featured on the full-length debut album, is a sweeping melodic rock song that is very reminiscent of the old Survivor sound.
The 15-minute EP is rounded out by a pair of exclusive tracks: "Stand by You" and "So Deadly". "Stand by You", I have to say, is a pretty sappy ballad. It's also very Survivor-like, but it's not a song most rock fans are going to need to hear more than once. "So Deadly" has a vaguely proggy, vaguely bluesy vibe that almost sounds like a Kansas track. It's a fun song, but is also clearly b-side material.
The EP also contains a cool video clip for "Sound of Home", which is a nice bonus.
While I'd certainly recommend any/all of Pride of Lions' full-length albums to all melodic rock fans, particularly those who love Survivor, I wouldn't recommend picking up this EP until you have all of the regular albums first. It's worth owning, but not a real highlight of the band's career.
