4.0 out of 5 stars A Little Piece of Kiwi Heaven, September 7, 2005
This review is from: Sound Inside (Audio CD)
I can safely say that this album's sound comes down somewhere between Jack Johnson and The Killers (to use a less accurate but more major mainstream example). The vibe is essentially just chilled out - Jack Johnson - while the actual sounds have some heavy electronic feels to them thrown in with the guitar - The Killers, or more accurately in my opinion, Kasabian.

Unfortunately for the band's future success, there are no singles that stand out on this album that could make it on the main charts. My favourite off of this album, "Last Night," is the perfect fusion of buzzed-2am-at-the-beach and why-did-she-dump-me in feel, if not lyrically.

Do not mistake that to mean this album is depressing. It isn't. It is just quiet. After a month down under I've decided it's a Kiwi# thing.

There are some excellent guest vocals here which give the album a more urban feel, especially on Settle Down (if memory serves correctly). They are billed as a NZ hiphop group, but I'm not sure that fits this album, but more their previous one.

At 35 bucks USD this can be a bit expensive. If you find yourself in NZ or Australia (as I did), you can pick this up for 30 NZD (about 23-ish USD). You likely won't find a better price than Amazon's in North America until they break a single out. Like I said earlier, I don't think that's forthcoming but we'll see.

This CD is very good, don't let the import cost drive you away.

Since Amazon doesn't have the track info yet:

01 The Sound Inside

02 Wonder

03 The Otherside

04 Settle Down

05 Last Night ** Reviewer's Pick **

06 A Place for You

07 Duet

08 Question of Freedom

09 Ima (Might be Lma, but unlikely)

10 Beats Interlude

11 Too Easily

12 Lay Me Down

13 Twilight

Total playtime around 45 minutes.

# (Kiwi's are what New Zealanders call themselves, and they don't mind others doing so either)

Found it at an estate sale for 50 cents, did not have much hope, put it on the iPod and get this - it's just great! Really interesting group - and they pretty much sound like a different band on each track. Beautiful harmonies as well. Highly recommended. Can't wait for the next one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great pop music, October 27, 2005

"Sound Inside" is a fantastic album by a little-known kiwi group. It has a chilled out vibe, and a really nice feeling to it. The comparison to Kasabian another reviewer mentioned is perfectly valid, and if you like their self-titled debut, I think you'll like this as well. I agree with the Jack Johnson meets The Killers comparison as well, but don't be put off if you don't like either of those bands because the sound is quite different to both.

If you just want to check out a couple of tracks, have a listen to "The Other Side" (which was released as a single here in NZ), and "Wonder". But the album as a whole stands up really well, and should appeal to almost anyone that enjoys nice laid back rock music.
