The Music I Dream To, August 4, 2009
As a fan of the shoegaze movement of the 1990's, in particular The Verve, My Bloody Valentine and Lush, this album holds a special place in my heart. Released in 2008 by Northern California band, Astral Travel, "The Sound of Light" is in some ways a throwback to those records, with layers and layers of ethereal guitars, pulsating basslines and georgeous, lush female vocals. Drenched in reverb and magnificent tape delays, these songs are absolutely hypnotic---and beautiful.
"Euphoric Embrace" has to be my favorite track, which has an IDM feel to it---it feels like it was made with an electronic music program, but its driving guitars are all organic :)
"Lost in the Poppy Fields" is a close second. Just a beautiful song.
"Daughter of Autumn" is a beautiful instrumental track with just ever so fleeting sprinkles of male/female harmonies. Lulls me away...
"Atop the Rainbow Vale" is a more poppy sounding ballad, but still some beautiful lyrics, vocals and guitar melodies
"Seven Candles" is in 7! not often you have a song in 7/4. its a driving, more uptempo song. The lyrics touch upon the bands experience with "Advaita Vedanta" or non-duality through Astral Travel
"Isle of Skye" is luscious...feels like you are flying through the night sky. Some of the best lyrics I've ever heard: "...plumes of fuscia glow on the golden robe, the city lights below...and the whispers and echoes go, silhouetted..." outstanding
This is one of my favorite records, and if you have the means, I highly recommend picking a copy up.
