4.0 out of 5 stars These Guys Deserved Better
The Hoax split up in 1999, & the fact that they never became a huge success is incomprehensible. True, the SRV influence is obvious, but unlike other imitators, these guys were true originals in a genre that often becomes stagnant. Their soulful, funky spin on the blues is unlike anyone else I've heard. Hugh Coltman is one of my favorite vocalists of all-time, as well...

2.0 out of 5 stars This is not the real Hoax
Hoax (the prog band from Texas) had the name first and these bozos use it as their name. This is blues static garbage. Stick with the original Hoax. The Hoax is still around today-been proggin since 1980. Now Broadbus is the only one left since Manholepedroza left the fold-(fired)

True, the SRV influence is obvious, but unlike other imitators, these guys were true originals in a genre that often becomes stagnant. Their soulful, funky spin on the blues is unlike anyone else I've heard. Hugh Coltman is one of my favorite vocalists of all-time, as well as an incredible harmonica player, & Jon Amor and Jesse Davey are as powerful a duo on guitars as you'll ever hear. Still, this release gives only a hint of their full potential. Look for their live "Live Forever" finale. The latter is without a doubt my favorite blues CD of all-time.

To compare them to SRV, is not really deserving, you could use the same argument, that Stevie, sounds a lot like Lonnie Mack..But this cd, has to be a damn near, the "perfect", studio effort. Ive listend to this thing, too many times, and keep coming back to it...great vocalist, with two of the best, kick ass, twin guitarists..they could stand on their own, anyday, against any band, if only, they had not broken up...i cannot recommend, this cd more...Great cd. Great band.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best British Blues band, February 12, 2003
This review is from: Sound Like This (Audio CD)
I love this CD. Its not just all straight forward blues, they drift off a bit into other genres, like funk for instance, but it all works well.
Hugh Coltman has a damn fine blues voice, and Jessey Davey and Jon Amor play a pretty impressive guitar. If you like to hear good guitarists playing the blues, give these guts a try. Even if they have broken up, they are REALLY worth a listen, but hey, thats just my humble opinion......

5.0 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE HEAVY BLUES, November 29, 2004
This review is from: Sound Like This (Audio CD)
Blazing guitar work and also some exceptional slow blues songs such as Swallow My Pride - clear crisp guitar work. Fantastic harp work by Coltman with some high notes that I didnt think were possible and his voice is smooth and enjoyable. Amor and Davey are incredible guitarists I wish they would get back together. I play and play this CD over and over and think this maybe there best overall cd. This is the one band I wish I could go see live. Dont know why they split but hard to believe they didnt stay together as they seemed to feed of each other for a strong, smooth blues music that doesnt seem to exist in some of the new blues bands.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic sleeper album!, June 13, 2001

I found my cassette of this album while going through an old shoe box and after playing it I realized that I'd forgotten how good these guys were. I guess I'd classify them as blues with a slightly harder edge. For me the standout track is definitely "Twenty Ton weight." It is a loud blues rocker with some fantastic electric harp. If this Cd suffers from one flaw it's that the couple of tracks that use the tExas shuffle tempo sound a little too much like early SRV, but beyond that these guys are great in their own right and if you like electric blues this is a CD to add to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than you guessed, November 28, 1999

Okay, so comparing The Hoax to SRV doesn't do either artist justice. That said, The Hoax evoke the same viceral reaction originally only occuring when SRV blasted into a deep solo. Why these guys haven't caught on is beyond me. Check out their Web site to see what I mean. I ordered everything they've recorded and plan to see them next time I'm in the UK -- they're that good!

Come across this fantastic cd when searching for guitar blues at amazon and I must say they impressed me.I have been a fan of SRV,Robin Trower ,Leslie West and I just had to get their music(Hoax). Fantastic guitar playing. Also got Live Forever and have been searching for more from them. Unfortunately they have split and I am deeply sorry. Although, I will rate their music highly.Recommended for bluesfans allover.

I stumbled across this band, and boy, am I glad! Of course, I found out the band split in 1999, so that was not happy news. The guitarist reminds me of Stevie Ray Vaughan even though this is not a "cover" band, nor are they cloning his sound. The blues harp player (the singer) sounds quite a bit like the one in Blues Traveler. Thus, the blues sound and effect is quite good.

As you listen to each song, you may expect there to be at least one clunker on the CD, but that is not the case. "Swallow My Pride," for example is a slow blues song played in SRV's style (although no one, in my opinion, could ever match SRV), with a harp solo that brought "Summertime" to my mind. "Scaramouche" sounds, again, like SRV playing through a leslie effect. Some of the tunes could use some improvement, mainly in the lyrics (call me picky), and thus I "only" give this CD four (4) stars. Nonetheless, I will be buying some more of their CDs.

4.0 out of 5 stars Stevie Ray lives, August 14, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Sound Like This (Audio CD)
An excellent album for those looking for Stevie Ray-style Stratocaster blues and good tunes. The songwriting is good, not just a regurgitation of blues standards and generic twelve bar ramblings. The singing is good, and the guitar playing is hot. The tone and phrasing are definitely from the Austin school of blues, but it doesn't sound too derivative. Definitely worth a listen.
