A good score performed by pros at their peak., June 12, 1998

Rodgers and Hammerstein had touched on this kind of material before -- some say to better effect -- in "The King and I," etc., but the original cast of "The Sound of Music" boasts Mary Martin singing her heart out, and, most especially, Patricia Neway as the Mother Abbess giving the most propulsive, muscular, go-out-there-and-win-one-for-the-Gipper performance of "Climb Ev'vy Mountain" you're ever likely to hear. This cut alone makes this album a must-have.

An intimate and lovely score. The Columbia sound is superb and the performances by Mary Martin, Theodore Bikel and Patricia Neway are wonderful. Orchestrations are brilliant. This won a slew of Tony Awards including Best Musical and brought Mary Martin her third and final Tony as well as one for Patricia Neway. For Broadway purists. If you're a fan of the film, stick with the Soundtrack.
