I bought these speakers in order to replace the PillowSonic Stereo Pillow Speaker which I had received last Christmas. My goal was mostly to get something more durable, but I found I like this one better anyway.

The PillowSonic speakers had a rather weak headphone connection which basically fell apart after about 4 months of use. I could deal with that until the cone speakers inside were accidentally crushed. I needed something that could stand up to a little more abuse. The cord on these Sound Oasis speakers seems much thicker and the headphone connector is nowhere near as flimsy. The speaker casings are hard plastic, so they cannot be crushed and ruined.

What I like best about these speakers is the 2 feet of cord between the left and right speaker. This means I can share with my husband, or more often just position each speaker exactly right under each ear. The sound quality is fairly good for a speaker of that size and I don't find I have to by lying right on top of it to hear it clearly.

All in all, these speakers are doing their job better than any others I've tried. Definitely recommended.

Edit on 4/6/10: I stumbled across this item again looking for a gift and just wanted to comment that 1 1/2 years after writing the initial review, my speakers still work perfectly. Durability for the win!

I had a PillowSonic Stereo Pillow Speaker that lasted about a year. It was OK but then it stopped working. This one worked better straight from the box. It was easier to position the 2 speakers under a pillow and they were louder and clearer than the PillowSonic Stereo Pillow Speaker .

update 6/28/2010: The wire to the first speaker broke. Annoying. Lasted about 18 months.

update: 1/1/2011. The wire broke again. Had to disasseble and solder.

The wire breaks at the point that it enters the speaker. It should have been reinforced here. Aftger repair, I added electrical tape to the spot where the wire exits the speaker. I hope this helps.

These speakers work well to tune out distracting background noises. However if you plan to sleep all night using them they slide around every time you roll over and often the sound cuts out and you most tap or jiggle them to make the sound come back. Be prepared to jiggle them every time you roll over. I bought 2 sets of these speakers and they both do this.

I bought this to replace my Radio Shack pillow speaker that had developed a loose connection after years of use. So far I am pleased with this item. It is well built and the volume is plenty loud to hear through a pillow, much louder than my older Radio Shack speaker.

My only minor complaint is that it does not have an in-line volume control. This is not really much of a problem since I can control the volume using the DVD player's volume controls.

Overall, I would buy again and recommend this item.

The pros....cord length is ample and the speakers are small enough to fit comfortably under the pillow.

The con.....cannot get enough volume from these guys to be able to hear through a single pillow. I tried attaching the speakers to various audio devices (TV, radio, stereo) and none of them could drive these much beyond a whisper. My wife, who has better hearing than I, agrees.

i got these because regular earbuds or headphones are itchy and uncomfortable. i use the pillow speakers with my Zune.

pro's:

- nice long, strong cord to the speakers, and between the two.

- easy to adjust placement of speakers.

- flat, can't feel them under the pillow.

- can be used outside of pillows too (during the day).

- works thru my tempurpedic pillow.

- great price.

- husband can't hear it.

con's:

- i have to crank up volume to max for SOME files

- podcasts can be muffled (spoken voices unclear)

- i still hear husband snoring.

i'm still undecided on the brainwave usage (one ear per speaker) because i tend to sleep on my side.

I find these two speakers difficult for me. If I put them close together and place them under the pillow directly under my ear I can hear with no difficulty. I have to keep the volumne down so I don't disturb my husband, so with the two speakers the volume is adequate. However, I have difficulty with all the wires and since there are two speakers, there is a lot of wire.

After having read several reviews, I decided that these speakers were probably the best I could get for this particular use. Wow! I felt like I must have entered a twilight zone of feedback misinformation. I hooked these speakers up to my home system, with lots of power, and I had to turn up the volume high enough to have blasted my walls with my regular speakers, or blown my eardrums apart with headphones, just to hear them under a pillow. I had to leave them out from under the pillow to the rear to actually hear them. Under the pillow they were more muted than my heartbeat. (These are fluffy down pillows). They have a really tinny sound to them--but I didn't expect Bose for the price. These sound like my transistor radio in 1962 with the same size speaker. It is a great idea, but these fall very short in my estimation. Functional external speakers for a small child with an MP3. It is a cheap investment to find out that cheap really does mean cheap.

Pillowsonic pillow speakers are larger (although they are still low profile because of their lack of plastic casing) so they provide much better bass, as well as all around good tonal quality. I used my pillowsonic speakers every night for three to four hours for almost three years before one of the speakers died (that's over 4000 hours of use). I read some reviews and though I would try the sound oasis speakers - the sound is poor - I'll soon buy another set of pillowsonic speakers - I like music too much to kill it through the sound oasis speakers much longer.

These pillow speakers are just what I was looking for, after trying many different ones, these are the best, they are built well, there is enough wire to place the speakers under the pillow, great sound for the listener and them alone, my husband listens to the radio at night and it used to drive me crazy with the others because I could always here the music, these give him great sound and I don't hear a thing!!! thank you for a quality product at a great price!!
