Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3–5—As an infant, Daniel Boom is incapable of being quiet. He grows older and works hard to not be injudiciously noisy—to use his "inside voice"—but he just can't help being loud. Then he is warned by his eccentric uncle that this may be just what the evil society Kid-Rid wants, as it tries to silence all children around the globe. Taking action, Daniel, his sister, and three other kids battle against the adults who try to squash their exuberant youthful tendencies. The basic message is simple: talking a lot, forgetting to be quiet, fidgeting, and other things that make parents shush you are held up as normal and even ideal by being elevated to the level of superpowers. Each page has a goodly amount of detail crammed into the colorful art, with Easter eggs, jokes, and clues throughout. The book has plenty of gags for anyone reading closely, and the persistently cheesy jokes and constant action will charm youngsters. It's a pity the denouement is so limp after the frenetic climax, doing little more than encouraging readers to buy the next book, but that will certainly not dampen the appetite of most kids who pick up this volume.—Benjamin Russell, Belmont High School, NH

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Daniel, almost 10, is a lively, thoughtful child, but he has a problem. He was born with “no indoor voice,” and his words have been known to shatter glass as well as cause consternation among neighbors, teachers, and friends. At his new school, he meets a handful of other children, each of whom has a different peculiarity (from fidgeting to throwing tantrums), which, like Daniel's, is eventually revealed as a superpower. Bursting with action, color, and intriguing characters (both good and evil), this works in every way. Smith’s visual wit, which puts a retro gloss on cartoon art characteristic of the 1950s, is on display without sidetracking the story, and pacing and plotting are superb; readers get to know Daniel as a kid before being plunged into impending disaster. Tension builds carefully, and there are plenty of puns along the way. Kids will anxiously await Daniel's next adventure. Grades 3-5. --Francisca Goldsmith

More About the Author

David "D.J." Steinberg was inspired to write children's books after he began tripping over them in a house with three loud boys and about 3,000 books. Now he has published 14 of his own, which have together sold over 500,000 copies, have been included in national book fairs and advanced reader lists, and garnered starred reviews and awards. They have ranged from funny poems to picture books to his latest popular graphic novel series, The Adventures of Daniel Boom AKA Loud Boy.

Not that entertaining children was a new thing for David, who has spent 30 years as an executive, producer and artist on more than fifteen major feature animated movies, including Meet the Robinsons, Mulan, Hercules, Tarzan, Cats Don't Dance, An American Tail, The Land Before Time, and Secret of NIMH. Serving these days as the Head of Studio for Starz Animation Toronto, David is overseeing production of feature films like Tim Burton's 9 (recent Focus Features release) and Elton John's Gnomeo & Juliet (Disney/Rocket Pictures).

Raised in Chicago, David attended Northwestern University before heading west. After hanging out for 25 years in Los Angeles, he is now residing in Toronto, in a country called Canada, with his wife, Nily, and his three favorite critics, Daniel, Micah, and Noah.

My six year old loves comic books, but I have a tough time finding comics with subject matter appropriate for his age. This series is super! The illustrations are bright and bold - they really jump off the page. The story is fun and thrilling (but not scary or violent). I can't tell you how amazed I was that he chose to read these books rather than watch TV. I am also happy with the overall message of the series - what makes you different is what makes you special... embrace it! The Loud Boy comics are a terrific series!

My 6 year old son (and 8 year old daughter too) loves this book. He pawed through it at least 20 times just looking at the pictures until we finally all read it together. Entertaining story, great art and colorful. We've already bought #2 and #3 and are sad there aren't more.

My 7yr old son found his first Daniel Boom book on the library shelf. He instantly became hooked. I took notice that every time I looked around he was reading this book "Mac Attack". Even late at night when I thought he had gone to bed,I would find him in his bedroom reading. Finally, I decided to read the book and find out why he was so impressed by it. It was brilliant! I was tickled to death to find that the author had taken these characters with obvious flaws and idiosyncrasies and turned them into super heroes. I love it! My son was diagnosed with ADD (attention deficit disorder)
when he was 4yrs old. So he and I are well acquainted with fidgeting, impulsiveness and speaking too loud. My son and I were delighted to find a story that highlighted characters who were not perfect...just like him. I purchased the entire series of "Daniel Boom aka Loud Boy" books right here on Amazon. I couldn't be more pleased. The stories are entertaining and very creative.

THE ADVENTURES OF DANIEL BOOM aka LOUD BOY is great! The story is a fun, comic, high energy tale that all of my kids enjoyed (particularly my 10 year old son.) The graphic novel layout is great for kids, and the illustrations are a perfect compliment to the storytelling: bright, loud, and fun. LOUD BOY is a happy addition to our family bookshelf. We can't wait until #2 comes out!

My 8-year-old son stayed up late into the night reading DANIEL BOOM AKA LOUD BOY. He loved it! Fun, fresh and funny. I'll be buying each book in this series as fast as the author can get them on the bookshelf.

When Daniel was born he and the three other babies who were in the hospital nursery were the recipients of an evil scientist's ray gun designed to make babies not cry. It backfired and we follow Daniel as he goes through life with a super sonic voice that causes disaster and destruction. By age ten he has learned to keep his voice to the correct decibels of an indoor voice but it is hard for him to maintain. Then when the evil scientist returns, this time to make the entire world noiseless, he has arranged for the 4 children's families to be transferred with their jobs at KR Industries to the same town so he can deal with them all at once. The children meet each other for the first time, discover the plot and discover their superhero abilities and identities. Daniel's younger sister is included in this as well for reasons unknown but somehow due to her uncle who is a good scientist. This is a fun, delightful first book in the series. The kids are all relatable having powers which readers will identify with and enjoy seeing being put to good use. Daniel's parents have a large presence in the story, and are shown respect while at the same time are eccentric characters. Kid's will love these children with superpowers; a story equally accessible for boys and girls with the 5 member team consisting of 2 girls and mixed ethnicities. I look forward to book 2.
