I first discovered Fred Thomas' project Saturday Looks Good To Me through their 2003 album ALL YOUR SUMMER SONGS. SLGTM's blend of modern lyrics with music and production that often looks back to 1960s proved very charming, especially for this fan of Warren Defever's own retro works with His Name Is Alive in the mid-1990s (Fred Thomas may be seen as a Defever protege). The next SLGTM album I got the opportunity to hear was SOUND ON SOUND from 2006.

Instead of finely crafting an album from a handful of choice cuts, Thomas has decided here to serve a great big goulash of songs, a whole 30 of them. SOUND ON SOUND in fact collects a variety of singles, CDR tracks, EPs and other unavailable recordings. There are massive jumps in style and performers from one track to the next, and subsequently in quality as well. Some of SOUND ON SOUND is very memorable. The opener "Can't Even Sleep" has Thomas meditating on a romance breakup followed by a bender and difficulties relating to friends, a situation I haven't found myself in much since my early 20s, but nonetheless the bold production and the catchy melodies make it irresistible. "Untitled" is a wash of piano and strings heavily treated in the studio, where towards the end fragments of "All Our Summer Songs" can be heard before it cuts off abruptly; if you are looking for more music in the vein of His Name Is Alive's "Early Works" collection, you'll love this.

Even the lesser material here still has a certain charm. "Learn to Live With Your Heartbreaks" has pathetic, repetitive and out of tune vocals, but it goes on for almost four minutes, an eternity on this collection of 1-2 minute ditties, but perhaps Thomas is intentionally playing with us. "Love Will Find You" is great art naďve, while the instrumental "Pet Store" is a throwaway, but still gives us a glimpse of the instrumental talents in this mainly vocal-based project.
