Different Skye yes, but...,
By
This review is from: Sound Soldier (Audio CD)
There is no doubt that this is a much different Skye Sweetnam than we heard on Noise From the Basement. But this is still a great cd. The guitars are lessened quite a bit, but alot of the songs still kick, with the techno beats and synthesizers paving the way. MAKE OUT SONG recalls the 80's with a Missing Persons-feel,(but more aggresive), HUMAN also manages to combine a driving beat with a catchy chorus. In fact, she manages to effectively combine driving techno beats with catchy choruses in most of the material, and still include a nice memorable sweet balad in Scary Love. The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star review is the slight childish CARTOON and parts of UlTRA, where she seems to like to hear herself with rhyming kid phrases (CITY, KITTY, PRETTY) check out the non-album BRING IT BACK great tune from this talented girl whom I can't WAIT to hear from again. Capitol dropping her in the US was stupid. This girl ROCKS.

Big Changes for Skye,
This review is from: Sound Soldier (Audio CD)
Altough in some ways it is very different from Skye's older release, Noise From the Basement, i believe that Sound Soldier was a success. I got the CD today, expecting to only find a few tracks that i really enjoyed, but honestly i love the entire CD. She has gone with more of a electronic based sound, but she has still managed to keep her more hard edge than your average pop singer. She has constantly been compared to Avril, but i find Skye's music much more intriguing because, now more so than ever, she is speaking her mind with her lyrics, and singing about things she wants to. So, to any Skye fans, or newcomers, i would highly recommend checking out her new album.

I will say that this cd for the most part is different, BUT you crank this baby up and let the sound and the bass take over and you will find yourself singing along and wiggling in your seat. I love it especially "Human," "Boyhunter" (which I have coveted since the Sims pets came out), "Cartoon" oh yeah!, and "Baby Doll Gone Wrong." A slow very pretty song on the album is "Scary Love" to rival her "Smoke and Mirrors" from the "Noise in the Basement" album. Overall I give it 5 of 5! There is only one song on the entire album I skip over about half the time- the rest are can't-skip hits. Thanks Skye for bringing us this album.

This album is just okay, It's not as catchy as her debut.
I'll say "Sound Soldier" is more animated and experimental than "Noise From The Basement". Some of the topics are so artificial. I believe Skye is trying too hard to be different and out-the-box,like claiming that "Music Is My Boyfriend", Or living life as a "Cartoon". Both songs happen to be two of the best top 3 tracks on the album. The lyrics are just so overthetop and have a tendency to make you roll your eyes at her for writing such things. The whole song i'm thinking "Gimme a break, I'm not convinced that you even believe what you're talking about". I also dislike how "Human" sounds so Britney. The number one song on this album (in my opinion) would have to be "Boy Hunter" featuring her HipHop counterpart, The unfamiliar female rapper Ak'Sent, who hails from inglewood who's around her same age. The song sounds like it samples the bassline from a NineInchNails song. It's a different sound for Skye but it works. From the music to the 16 bars, Skye and Ak'sent are bad b*****z on this track. "Boy Hunter" is a girl-power anthem about snatching up boys and having their way with them what a disturbing song for an artist who sounds like they're 10. "Kiss A Girl" also made my headspin a few times. It's a fun song and although it's different from Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" the shock value of a song with such lyrics has already been discussed and dealt with, we're over it. It's clear to me why Skye's music is so hard to market. How does the industry market music like this? The music itself is completely bubblegum and appeals to a kiddie crowd from ages 8-13. Yet the situations she chooses to discuss are 18 and over topics. 9 Times out of ten the crowd that can relate to her lyrics are not liking the sound of the music. And her true audience who the sound of the music actually appeals to have no idea what they're singing along to. The content of these songs are all masked by the singers mini-me styled vocal and fun girly image. It's like watching Lola from Hannah Montana singing "How Many Licks" by Lil'Kim. I'm not complaining, I'm alarmed. I like Skye a lot but this album was sort of a dud.

I was a fan of Skye Sweetnam when her first cd came out and I couldn't find it anywhere near me. I was happy to see that Amazon had it available. It is a wonderful cd and I love all of her songs.

I very much enjoyed Noise From the Basement, but as a debut CD there was definite room for improvement. When I found out Skye Sweetnam had followed up with a new release I had to find out what it was all about. It's about loud, brash, raw, and untamed, and I like it. I was pleased to discover that the sound is still the Skye I remember, even though the style has changed somewhat. With production by The Matrix, she's picked up a lot of the sound of Avril Lavigne without falling into the trap of being an Avril clone. It feels more like she grew into a high-octane, high-decibel, rough-edged kind of style that she was only hinting at in her first release, and now she's more at home with herself and her music.
The CD opens and closes with its defining tracks, "Music Is My Boyfriend" and "Babydoll Gone Wrong", which both backup her intense vocals with even more intense arrangement; I recommend watching the videos to get a feel for those since preview tracks are not available here. While "Make-Out Song", "My Favorite Tune", "Cartoon", and "Ultra" follow in this vein pretty well, there's enough variety on the CD that it doesn't get boring. "Human" is both more melodic and more electronic, with a sort of split-personality chorus that alternates between soft and hard. "Scary Love" is the only ballad on the disc. "Boyhunter" is also unique, somewhat rap in its style. "Ghosts" and "Into Action" both have a different feeling that's reminiscent of No Doubt; those two and "Kiss A Girl" are the most pop-oriented songs on the disc. Will this new CD please everyone who loved the first one? That depends on what you liked it for. My favorite song off the original was "I Don't Really Like You"; most of this CD feels like a more mature followup on that. For those who preferred the more acid-bubblegum quality of young Skye, that may seem like it's missing here, but I can hear a playful streak coming out in more than a few songs (especially "Cartoon"). There may be more acid than bubblegum now, but Skye has grown up a bit, and I like the sound of the grown-up Skye even better.

The CD isn't in stores yet!!,
This review is from: Sound Soldier (Audio CD)
For some reason I called most of the stores where I live, and they don't carry it. What gives? I ordered it online here, and can't wait to get it. I'm surprised their hasn't been more advertisements about it. From what I've heard from the audio samples, it sounds pretty good to me, if not better.
