Format: Audio CD
"Sound Sun Pleasure" is a good, fairly conventional set of 6 tracks, mostly other writers' material, well-recorded and played by an Arkestra that has a very tight and very beautiful reed section at work, trafficking primarily in low tones (provided in part by Pat Patrick's baritone sax). Female vocalist Hatte Randolph sings on the majority of tracks. The session is not unlike the similarly lush and conventional "Holiday For Soul Dance".
The CD is augmented with some of Ra's earliest recordings, previously released as Side 1 of a Saturn LP entitled "Deep Purple". These 7 tracks are less even and less impressive, but nice to have.

A beautiful collection, from two time periods in the Fifties. The first lot are very well recorded. Astonishing how well these tapes survived the years; who knows how they were stored. The second batch are a bit lower quality, but not so much lower that any real jazz listener will be bothered; you're used to that from early King Oliver and Bird, right?

As the previous reviewer indicated, these are mostly SunRa's mid-sized ensemble performing other people's music, something Sun Ra was good at, throughout his career. The performance of Round Midnight is as good a vocal performance as you will find, with Hattie Randolph; if this a favorite composition, the CD is worth the bother for that reason alone. All of them combine the feeling of graceful convention and slight displacement, alienation, so common when Sun Ra assays such material. Excellent solos, as always with this crew (John Gilmore, Pat Patrick, Art Hoyle).

I'm not sure, but I think the recording of Enlightenment is the same take as the one we hear in Jazz in Silhouette. If not, it's extremely close. So don't get too excited about this one.

The odd batch were recorded by amateur technology, in Sun Ra's apartment and like places. Supposedly (liner notes) they are the earliest Sun Ra recordings.
