Superb,
By drowninginbooks (Madison, WI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sound of the World (Audio CD)
I listen to a lot of world music and own lots of compilations, but when it comes to compilations covering the whole world, this one was a revelation. Superbly selected -- Charlie Gillett's outdone himself. Most selections were new to me, and there is one delightful surprise after another. As I listen to music on my iPod, I always rate the cuts I like: there are lots of 5-star items here. With most whole-world compilations, I find there are a number of cuts that I'd just as soon skip over -- I just like some regions' music better than others -- but that's not the case here.
I'm not often moved to write an Amazon review, but I couldn't help myself. If you enjoy world music, I think you'll really want to get this one.

outstanding collection of high-energy contemporary world music,
This review is from: Sound of the World (Audio CD)
I listen to a lot of world music, both contemporary and traditional. This selection by Charlie Gillett includes some of the most amazing rhythms and grooves I've found in a single compilation, and each song is a true hybrid of traditional and modern motifs and instrumentation. Everything on these 2 disks is eminently listenable, and most of the cuts are stunningly beautiful and/or energizing. If you're interested in world music from a wide range of cultures and how multiple influences are merging, and especially if you like to dance, this is a great compilation.
