5.0 out of 5 stars The Sound of an Artist and a Starr, April 2, 2006
This review is from: Sound of You & Me (Audio CD)
Garrison Starr is that rare artist who continues to astonish with each and every new effort released during her career. Her growth as a writer, vocalist, and performer exceeds all expectations and leaves my jaw hanging in utter amazement.

"The Sound of You & Me" is her most intimately personal and emotionally moving collection of songs to date. Mature and worldly... yet innocent. Relaxed, confident, and strong... yet fragile. There is a longing in her voice, an ache, a loneliness... combined with the knowledge and wisdom of one who has survived the hurt and pain.

Garrison Starr is honest enough to bare her troubled soul, sweet enough to offer you hope, and gifted enough to craft melodies you will cherish throughout your own life.

Pop music simply doesn't get much better than this. Brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better hearing her in a live setting, April 17, 2006

Of all her albums, I think this latest one best expresses what it's like to hear Ms. Starr perform live. She's amazing. When you're sitting 10 feet away from her in a small club, and you hear that penetrating voice, and those poignant lyrics, it can be quite a rewarding experience. And on this album, Garrison does a fantastic job of bringing that brilliance to everyone who isn't fortunate enough to see her. Most of the songs seem somewhat sad, but mostly in a reflective way, as if she were singing about these items in a retrospective sort of way. Painful, but free from the pain.

Some personal favorites are: Beautiful in Los Angeles, Pendulum, No Man's Land, Pretending, and Sing it Like a Victim. I highly recommend purchasing this album. It's a great one for a long road trip....

4.0 out of 5 stars Starr sounds, April 20, 2006

Garrison Starr just gets better and better, and with her latest offering the Nashville based singer-songwriter has continued that upward creative curve. The Sound Of You & Me is one of those rare, perfectly formed albums where you wouldn't want to add, subtract or change a single note.

Compared to her past material, The Sound Of You & Me has less twang and more of an acoustic pop feel, whilst also retaining a sense of folkish introspection befitting of Starr's intimate, heartfelt lyrics about a failed love affair. The production here is absolutely flawless, and sometimes this can lead to material that is about as emotionally resonant as a piece of styrofoam. Thankfully, this collection not only sounds beautiful, it also stirs the soul, snags the breath and elevates the heart-rate with alarming frequency. Desire, regret, yearning, and achingly good hooks ..... it's all here, and sometimes all within the space of one song.

As a devoted music listener, I've come to prize that all too rare feeling of elation that comes from connecting to a record instantly - and one listen to The Sound Of You & Me was all it took to make the transition from liking Garrison Starr's work to loving it. Unfailingly lovely.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT, December 1, 2006
This review is from: Sound of You & Me (Audio CD)
After hearing a few of the songs on her website, I had to get this CD. It definitely did not disappoint. There are no songs that I would skip over. I don't think I can express how good this CD is as eloquently as the other reviewers, but it's definitely going to be in my cd player for quite some time.

My introduction to this lovely lady came when she opened for Steve Earle in early 2003. Backed only by Steve's brother on drums and one other tremendous guitarist (Neilson Hubbard, perhaps?) she made a mighty impression. I've been lucky enough to see her subsequently a number of times in small clubs around the Seattle area. In these venues she never fails to captivate with the strength of her craft, the clarity of her communication and the amazing vocal gifts she brings to every performance.

This collection of recordings seem to have struck the perfect balance of studio polish and performance, while not detracting from the gifts she clearly brings as one of THE most underappreciated and under-heard singer songwriters. How lucky are we to have Garrison in this world? She offers truth, passionate enthusiasm, humor, grace and an amazing amount of pure tuneful talent to any music lover who will set aside a few moments to listen and let her practice her magic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pleasing Folk Pop, October 9, 2006

This is my first exposure to Garrison Starr and it's been a good one. Her songs are intelligent and folk-pop based, a great combo in my opinion. "The Sound of You and Me" did not grab my upon first listen - - but after a few spins I was feeling the vibe. Recommended for any one who enjoys singer-songwriter folk/pop (i.e., Shawn Colvin, Roseanne Cash, Josh Rouse, Matt Costa).

5.0 out of 5 stars Love the G. Starr, July 1, 2006

"The Sound of You and Me" has grabbed hold and won't let go. Personally, my favorites are "Pretending," "Sing It Like a Victim," and "Let Me In," but I enjoy all 11 tracks. Her superhero voice is amazing - a real gift -- nice that she's using it for good instead of evil. It's cool for us fans that you can still catch Garrison live at smaller venues, where she is very fan-friendly. (Thanks for signing my guitar G-Starr). I'd sure like to see her featured on Austin City Limits.
