5.0 out of 5 stars The Best I've Heard
A lively, compact and professional quick course. This is aimed at personal communication. Although applicable to public speaking, that is only addressed by-the-way. There are clearly-directed exercises with time estimates to achieve results. You'll need a tape recorder with a microphone to get very much from the exercises. Superb sound quality. Tapes only, no...

3.0 out of 5 stars Odd
The tapes give good information, but the main speaker sounds as though she has a lisp, and I didn't find her tone of voice to be pleasant but rather odd sounding. However, everyone else featured in the tapes sound normal. I normally wouldn't comment on such a matter, but given the subject, it doesn't seem appropriate to me, and had I known this, I would not have been...

If you want to speak more clearly, or if you want to sound more like an announcer, or if you want your speaking to have more impact, this will probably help. The title is very accurate. It could also be called, "Speak Like You Want Them To Listen."

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The author is quite professional and appears to know what she is doing. The 4 tapes are enjoyable and not too technical. They cover all aspects of the human voice and give helpful exercises for making improvements. I was quite pleased with this set of tapes. They deliver what they promise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Covers a wide variety of speech and voice problems, April 3, 2001
This is an excellent audiobook covering all aspects of better speech and overall communication. Carol Fleming helps you add vitality to your voice, speak using your natural pitch, avoid whininess and raspiness, avoid using "filler" words and overused superlatives, and a lot more. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in changing some aspect of his/her voice.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1st Rate Advice for Those to Busy to Consult a Voice Coach, January 20, 2000
By A Customer
With polish, wit and charm, Carol Flemming and a team of voice professionals presents a well organized and thorough audio program covering the difficult subject of voice control.

As a working lawyer often asked to appear in court, I have long sought the elusive Holy Grail of a powerful speaker's voice. Too busy to consult a voice coach, I turned to several books, discovering that to learn this skill, it really first needs to heard.

Enter Carol Flemming's 4 tape audio presentation, The Sound of Your Voice. Her program includes helpful illustrations and practice exercises that get the heart of the matter fast. Carol teaches you how to achieve a melodic voice that actually invites other to listen. I liked best of all the style of Carol and her team, which was professional and graceful (no first-timers here). Finishing the program, my voice felt an instant mastery of the basics and a new-found confidence. Even everyday communication with family and friends has became more pleasurable. I recommend this resource as a definite gift to the voices of working professionals on the go.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally got!! What I wanted !!, October 13, 2000

I recently bought "The Sound of Your Voice" by Dr Carol Fleming. After listening to all the 4 cassettes, I felt I made a right choice. I was really impressed by the concepts discussed in the cassettes, I must say. Citing the practical real-life examples, Dr Carol Fleming helps us in analyzing the qualities of a good voice. There are several exercises & assignments, which help us identifying our voice defects & subsequenly correct them. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in improving his or her 'sound of voice'.

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical, useful ideas with exercises and drills to follow, May 3, 1999
I found this tape set to be very useful in my telephone sales and customer service skills training sessions. Have purchased a dozen or more sets for use by my clients. Dr. Fleming not only demonstrates what to do to improve the sound of your voice, but gives drills and exercises for doing it. Do the recordings of your own speech patterns and follow her instructions. Before long, you'll hear noticeable changes in your voice.

This review is from: The Sound of Your Voice (Audio CD)
I am giving this product 5 stars because I think that on balance, it provides a LOT of essential information about voice, in a remarkably efficient form, for very little money. I learned a LOT by playing these four cds in my car, and the exercises are quite useful indeed.

I need to caution you about something: the style of the presentation is rather cloying. It's a bit like those old educational films made for high school students in the 1950's, that we used to laugh at decades later, with strange music out of the 1970's. I cannot tell if this was done intentionally for humor, or if it was simply done with earnest but some time ago.

I needed to let go of this in order to appreciate the content of the cds. I did do that, and I'm happy that I did.

The cd information includes details on different aspects of speech, how it sounds when it's wrong, and how it sounds when it's right, and exercises to determine whether this particular problem applies to you and if so, how to gently correct it over time.

What more could you ask for? There is no magic pill to fix your speech. It takes observation, and exercise. One-on-one consultation with an expert would probably be better of course, but even so, these cds provide excellent background, where you can learn on your own time and let the personal consultation operate more efficiently.

Ok, one more thing: the speaker has a great voice except for a slight lisp. How weird is that! A voice teacher to have a slight speech impediment? BUT, I'd be willing to bet that it used to be much worse and this experience, having someone help her minimize this problem, was part of what motivated her to take up this career.

So, if you want to improve your speech, or simply suspect that your speech could be improved, this product is an awesome place to start, both in terms of quality of content and the price. There are a few little annoyances along the way (IMHO) that are well worth overlooking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Look No Further, June 26, 2005
If you want to improve the way you speak, look no further. Although this audiocassette series is outdated, it still delivers.
I wanted to improve my voice for personal reasons and I wasn't willing to shell out big bucks for professional help. I chose this series because it was cheap and there were positive reviews vouching for it.
Before I started the program, I was dwelling having to go through the series. I assumed it would be a long and boring task. But my mind was set on improving my voice so I started the series. Surprisingly, the series wasn't boring but fun and entertaining from the start. I had fun engaging with Fleming and I thought that Wesley, a man with a cool accent, was funny even though it seems he's not trying to be. I completed the series within a few days.
If you want to improve your voice, you have to be aware of exactly what it is about your voice that you have to improve on. Little by little, the series points out bad voice mannerismns and explains methods in which you can improve on them. You'll hear examples of good mannerisms to give you a clear idea of what Fleming is explaining. I was motivated because some bad mannerisms are *very easy* to improve on; you simply have to be aware of what it is and you can start working and improving on it immediately.
Look no further ladies and gentlemen...if you want to improve your voice, then Dr. Carol Fleming's "The Sound of Your Voice" is the way to go.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just not for me, March 25, 2003
By A Customer
Her voice sounds nasally just like she complained about someone else's. I couldn't follow. You have to be able to discern the sound of your own voice and how it sounds to others and how to make your voice sound like the tape. too confusing for me. finding my natural tone instead of mimicing the tape was hard. still trying.
