Amazon Verified Purchase
I have previously compared SoundHound (free) with Shazam Encore and came to the conclusion that SoundHound was superior and worth bearing through the ads. Now that Amazon has decided to offer it for free (3.30.2011), I think it would be useful to compare the paid versions of both apps.

This is the link to the previous review: [...]
The same pro's and con's exist. SoundHound still leaves Shazam in the dust when it comes to how quickly it will identify the song. The interfaces are both decent; nothing to rave about and neither is particularly better than the other. I did like the album information returned by SoundHound better than Shazam and that still holds true.

One thing that I had left out last time was that Shazam does offer a widget which I found most useful. The widget provided a updating list of songs being tagged by other users and that was really neat. SoundHound offers a widget, too, but I haven't been able to get it to tag a song from the widget and overall, I just think the widget is much too large for the purpose it serves. A major portion of the widget serves as a placeholder for the info (I assume) which I can't seem to bring up through the widget.

I didn't mention that I tried to sing into SoundHound last time and it worked. I tried live recording on youtube and that didn't fair well for either app but when it was just me and my voice (which is decent at best) singing the Arthur theme song, it was able to identify it.

The comparison between the paid version and free version of SoundHound doesn't bode well though. Even though I dislike ads, I find the price tag a little high when the performance seems to be the same. There are no additional features that come with the $5 that you spend other than the widget (which, again, I can't get to work).

So it is my recommendation that you add this to your library and use it over Shazam Encore. However, after 3.30.2011, I would not suggest you pay $5 for this app. The free version is just as good.

Way better than Shazam March 22, 2011
I've had Shazam for a while and, after the initial amazement that an app could actually do song recognition, I grew frustrated with the spotty ability to identify songs and frequent hangs on my Nexus One. A friend showed me this one in January and it blew me away. Not only is it much better at recognizing radio tunes (my primary use in discovering new music/artists to check out), you can literally hum or whistle a tune and it works.

Best music app March 25, 2011
This was one of the only apps I purchased for my HTC Incredible and I couldn't be happier. I would constantly hear a song playing in the car but couldn't remember it later to add to my iTunes. This was the perfect solution and I spend a lot more money in my iTunes account now. This easily captures 99% of the songs including music in a bar, playing in a movie, etc. . . Sometimes that background noise makes it a little bit difficult but it usually does a great job. Every so often I go back into my history and purchase all the songs I liked. It's very easy to use while driving. It even pulls the lyrics if you are struggling with the words for a new song.

Fails to connect even when using wi-fi.
I love that it lets you hum or sing the song, but doesn't really matter if it won't connect to the server. Going back to Shazam.

well worth it
I like this better than the "other" similar app. I use it at least once a day. I would, however, like to see the Amazon market people allow for sooner updates. Read more
