5.0 out of 5 stars Shazam Encore v. SoundHound Infinity March 30, 2011
Verified Purchase
I have previously compared SoundHound (free) with Shazam Encore and came to the conclusion that SoundHound was superior and worth bearing through the ads. Now that Amazon has decided to offer it for free (3.30.2011), I think it would be useful to compare the paid versions of both apps.

This is the link to the previous review: [...]
The same pro's and con's exist. SoundHound still leaves Shazam in the dust when it comes to how quickly it will identify the song. The interfaces are both decent; nothing to rave about and neither is particularly better than the other. I did like the album information returned by SoundHound better than Shazam and that still holds true.

One thing that I had left out last time was that Shazam does offer a widget which I found most useful. The widget provided a updating list of songs being tagged by other users and that was really neat. SoundHound offers a widget, too, but I haven't been able to get it to tag a song from the widget and overall, I just think the widget is much too large for the purpose it serves. A major portion of the widget serves as a placeholder for the info (I assume) which I can't seem to bring up through the widget.

I didn't mention that I tried to sing into SoundHound last time and it worked. I tried live recording on youtube and that didn't fair well for either app but when it was just me and my voice (which is decent at best) singing the Arthur theme song, it was able to identify it.

The comparison between the paid version and free version of SoundHound doesn't bode well though. Even though I dislike ads, I find the price tag a little high when the performance seems to be the same.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best music app March 25, 2011
By wyplash
This was one of the only apps I purchased for my HTC Incredible and I couldn't be happier. I would constantly hear a song playing in the car but couldn't remember it later to add to my iTunes. This was the perfect solution and I spend a lot more money in my iTunes account now. This easily captures 99% of the songs including music in a bar, playing in a movie, etc. . . Sometimes that background noise makes it a little bit difficult but it usually does a great job. Every so often I go back into my history and purchase all the songs I liked. It's very easy to use while driving. It even pulls the lyrics if you are struggling with the words for a new song.

3.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't seem to like hip-hop/rap April 15, 2011
Verified Purchase
I've had great luck with this app, but only when the song doesn't have a heavy bass line. A rap song was playing during the credits of a movie that I wanted to figure out what it was. Five to six times I tried to use SoundHound, but each time it couldn't get the song. Fortunately for me the credits had the title of the song. When I searched the title of the song, it was listed. Every time that I have used this on non-rap songs it has worked spectacularly. I'm addicted to the app, and find that even when I know a song, I still want to find out what the lyrics are so I use this app. I haven't tried it at a concert yet, but even in sports bars it has done well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Karaoke practice March 30, 2011
I have had better luck with this application than with shazam when it comes to identifying me singing or humming a song ( and I am pretty bad).

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy it if you have the Kindle Fire 2nd Generation January 20, 2013
Verified Purchase
I only gave this app a 3 since I didn't get to use it at all. I downloaded it to my Kindle Fire 2nd Generation but I couldn't get it to work. When I called for assistance, I was told you need the HD version because the previous versions of Kindle Fires do not have a built-in microphone. I didn't see that mentioned anywhere before I downloaded it so I wanted to bring this to the attention of those of you who don't have the HD version and may be considering buying this app.

5.0 out of 5 stars Way better than Shazam March 22, 2011
I've had Shazam for a while and, after the initial amazement that an app could actually do song recognition, I grew frustrated with the spotty ability to identify songs and frequent hangs on my Nexus One. A friend showed me this one in January and it blew me away. Not only is it much better at recognizing radio tunes (my primary use in discovering new music/artists to check out), you can literally hum or whistle a tune and it works.

5.0 out of 5 stars most likely to identify that song March 30, 2011
Verified Purchase
SoundHound was consistently able to identify songs in areas I never would have expected it would work. Unlike Shazam, the ability of SoundHound to identify a song by whistling or humming is unmatched. The best part is the results in that it gives you a one click link to search for lyrics!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best when I compared March 30, 2011
A while back, I compared SoundHound, Shazam, and Verizon's VCast Song ID. I tried random stuff from the radio, including a lot of classical, both while in a car and at home. I also tried some music from my music player over its FM transmitter, including some jpop.

SoundHound easily won out over VCast Song ID (no surprise there I suppose). Did better than Shazam as well. It's coverage of classical is not perfect (but better than the others). Same with jpop.

I've even had SoundHound work on the music playing over the PA system in a Mexican restaurant. That surprised me.

Soundhound is the best app in the world, really.

Shazam and others often miss things. I found them quite unreliable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not better than the free version
The options seem more simplistic than the free version. And it takes longer to open and load. I miss the setting where it automatically listens when you open the app.
