Biography

Deep Purple survived a seemingly endless series of lineup changes and a dramatic mid-career shift from grandiose progressive rock to ear-shattering heavy metal to emerge as a true institution of the British hard rock community; once credited in the Guinness Book of World Records as the globe's loudest band, their revolving-door roster launched the careers of performers including Ritchie Blackmore,… Read more in Amazon's Deep Purple Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Live Purple without the crowd?, July 7, 2001

6 recordings culled from Deep Purple's Australasian tour of March 2001. Compared to the previous boxset (New Live and Rare) these are much better. Being soundboard recordings the sound is clearer and crisper. However the mix is a little bit variable across the recordings with the crowd being virtually non-existent on the Concerto performances in particular. If you like the Bootleg sound i.e. the sound that you hear at the concert then this is not it. This should not prevent Purple fans from buying this set if you want to hear a band on form. The shows are Melbourne 9th of March, Woolongong (13th), Newcastle (14th) Hong Kong (20th) and 2 Tokyo shows (24th and 25th). Whilst the recordings are excellent, the very short time frame means that the set list does not change much. The Tokyo shows contain the Concerto for Group and Orchestra and also feature Ronnie James Dio performing a couple of songs from the Butterfly Ball along with Fever Dreams and Rainbow in the Dark from his Dio catalogue. The four other 2 cd sets have a basic set list of: Woman from Tokyo, Ted the Mechanic, Mary Long, Lazy, No One Came, Black Night, Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming, Fools, Perfect Strangers, Hey Cisco, When a Blind Man Cries, Smoke on the Water, Speed King, Hush Highway Star. '69 appears on the Melbourne show. The Concerto shows are as follows; Pictured Within (Gillan on vocals), Sitting in a Dream, Love is All, Fever Dreams, Rainbow in the Dark, Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming, The Well Dressed Guitar, (a new guitar workout with orchestra) Wring That Neck, When A Blind Man Cries, Fools, Perfect Strangers, The Concerto, Pictures of Home Smoke on the Water. I have given this set 5 stars as I believe that the performances are excellent. The sound is excellent in a different way to the previous bootleg style sound where you heard what it would be like in the audience. Here you hear what it is like from the performers viewpoint. Careful with the volume knob this time on the Tokyo discs though!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great..., January 30, 2004
This review is from: Soundboard Series (Audio CD)
There is a thousand positive things to say about Purple and their music, but this time I wont do that!

These recordings are great musicwise, but the sound is not good. Sometimes the vocals are to high in the mix, sometimes the bass, drums etc, but most of the time Steve Morse is way too high in the mix. IMO his (bad!) guitar sound is dominating all the cd's too much. I don't fancy screaming eighties guitars, especially in Deep Purple.

Less is more, Steve!!!

The quality of these concerts is excellent. The band is in splendid shape and Steve Morse plays with fantasy.
indispensable for the purple's fan
