The quality of sound this little box puts out is amazing.

A company that takes that kind of time for their (potential) customers assuredly puts even more effort and sound engineering into their products.
D. Terrell
Although there are better sounding bluetooth speakers, they're considerably larger and/or much more expensive (Bose Soundlink, Big Jambox, etc.).

Before I start this review, I would like to say that this is completely independent and from someone who has run the gamut on portable speakers. I'm going to do my best to remain unbiased and compare to other portable speakers I've used (and there are A LOT of them), but I honestly think that what Soundfreaq has done with the Sound Kick is unparalleled. The cost, portability, and sound quality that this speaker brings is what I've always dreamed of but inevitably have had to make sacrifices until now. To preface, I've traveled extensively with this speaker and have been using for close to 3 months now. So, on we go...

When I first heard about this speaker back in May, I couldn't find it anywhere. I went to four different Target Store locations in the Chicago area (the only place selling it at the time), and they were all sold out. However, I was able to do side-by-side sound tests with both the Soundfreaq Sound Kick and the Bose Soundlink (my other potential choice at the time). I'm 100% convinced that I would pick the Soundfreaq Sound Kick in a blind test every single time. And, at the time, it was marked at 1/3rd of the cost of the Bose (the Sound Kick is slightly more expensive now, but worth every cent and then some).

I was set to leave the country (permanently) within a week and somewhat discouraged that I wouldn't be able to bring a Sound Kick with me. So, taking a shot in the dark, I decided to email the company to see if they knew where I might be able to get one close by (and described my situation and VERY limited time). They emailed back almost immediately, and said they'd see if they could find one around the office and would send via FedEx just as soon as I replied!

This is a great little Bluetooth speaker. If you are looking for something small but with a good sound then this may be for you! As I say in the video, I'm ultimately going with the Logitech Bluetooth Boombox as I'm looking for a little more volume and bass; but paying $20 more and getting a unit that isn't quite as friendly in the suitecase. Also, the SoundFreaq has media control buttons and a very handy USB port for charging - I will miss these features.

So for the price of less than $100 this unit blows away the competition in that price range. I used it for a week and almost kept it, but my desire to blow out my ear drums won out. Don't get me wrong, this unit kicks out pretty good for it's size and price point though!!

First, let me praise Sound Freaq's customer support. I purchased this unit second hand and could not figure out why it would not charge. I sent an email to Sound Freaq explaining my situation, and within a few days, they sent me a new battery! After following their instructions on how to replace the battery, I discovered that my Sound Kick's battery had been removed before I bought it! Installing the battery, which is something you CAN NOT do on MOST bluetooth speakers, resolved the charging issue, of course! Even after explaining the unit was used, and offering to pay for the battery, this company instead of greedily charging me, is sending me a T Shirt! WOW!

I have purchased three bluetooth speakers over the past year for two different people and lastly, myself. The first two times I opted for the original Logitech Boom Box. The LBB is loud, has wonderful bass, and decent battery life. It easily compares (if not surpasses) the Bose Soundlink and every other unit I tested in the store. Especially at 1/3 of the price. These units were to be used as primary speaker systems for the two people they were purchased for, and would not be moved around much. The LBB is pretty large.

I had heard the Sound Kick at a store one day, and was VERY impressed with the sound coming out of such a small device! I happened across a used one online and immediately grabbed it for my office. This speaker is AMAZING. It has bass you would expect to be coming out of a MUCH larger device. The overall sound is great for my eclectic listening choices, including Dub step, Jazz, Hip Hop and Rock. It sounds great at a normal listening volume, and even better when cranked up to 11! It gets REALLY LOUD! Like, hear it 200 feet away in another office with my office door closed loud!

I already have a small collection of very small portable speakers, such as X-Mini II Capsule Speaker (Black) and Altec Lansing iM-237 Orbit Ultraportable Speaker for MP3 Players (Silver) which I choose from depending on the need for size vs sound vs batteries. However, I wanted something wireless, but I didn't want to spend $300. I set out researching what had the best price point vs sound quality.

If you prefer batteries (I use Eneloop's) your choices are MUCH more limited, such as the above Orbit, or in larger size factor, the Creative D100 Wireless Bluetooth Speaker (Black), so keep that in mind if you just HAVE to have batteries. For long trips, I always take the Orbit because I can pack extra sets of AAA's, and it's only a matter of time before the X-Mini's internal battery stops holding a charge.

If you don't mind internal batteries, your choices include the entire available range of devices out there including the high-priced Bose and Jawbone offerings. More than one reviewer recommended the Soundfreaq Sound Kick. When I saw someone mention that they were available at Target stores, I drove right down to my nearest Target and grabbed one because I knew I can always return it easily if it didn't work well.

My unit took at least 3-4 hours to finish charging out of the box. I would much prefer if I could charge this with any available USB source including 2.
