Product Description

The Special Edition foxL (pronounced foxul) PLATINUM, defies conventional wisdom about sound - a miniature audiophile portable music system that turns the palm of your hand into a personal amphitheater; it provides enhanced performance features beyond even the award-winning foxLv2 Bluetooth model. Wall or battery powered. Wired or wireless. For phones/ipod/mp3 players, laptops, mobile gaming, and more. Soundmatters' foxLv2 Bluetooth is the first and only pocket-sized portable loudspeaker for audio purists - now with great sounding wireless music streaming for Macs, iPhone and iPod touch. It also has a built-in microphone for business-quality hands-free operation to take phone calls on. To achieve audiophile-approved sound quality and its remarkable 8-octave bandwidth, the tiny foxL utilizes highly advanced speaker technologies found nowhere else, regardless of size or price. Additionally, the Platinum edition add CSR's aptX Bluetooth codec for On-board amplification is supplied by four ultra high-efficiency digital amplifiers delivering total power up to 8W at < 0.1%THD. Unlike other portable speaker systems, foxL engineered around a pair of proprietary, highly sophisticated acoustic drivers, unique in their ability to reproduce both extreme high (tweeter) and low (woofer) frequencies from a single very small diameter (25mm) dome speaker, dubbed the""Twoofer"".

I'm comparing the Foxl v2.2 Platinum against the Jambox, JBL Flip & Bose Soundlink 2.
The Foxl is the smallest and lightest of the items listed above. It's a bit pricey at $229. The design factor does not really wow you like the Flip and Jambox but it feels solid and made of good material. The Foxl has apt-x technology built into it. This will give you CD quality music with apt-x compatible devices. Unfortunately the iPhones and iPads do not have this technology on their devices. The Foxl claims to get 20 hours but they fail to tell you that it only gets 20 if you use it at moderate sound levels and connected with a 3.5mm cable. If you plan on streaming all day via bluetooth, you will most likely get about 8-10 hours out of it. Unless I have a defective unit, that's what I have been averaging for the past week. The Foxl acts as a speakerphone that works pretty well. I can hear the caller very well and they have no issues with hearing me either. There are two ways for you to charge this device. You can either charge it with a mini usb cable or through an ac adapter. These are all provided to you and they even include a set of international wall adapters that you can use overseas. There's a port that allows you to add a subwoofer to enhance your listening experience. The bass causes the Foxl to dance, so that's why Soundmatters provides a non slip mat to keep it from dancing. But if you use a moderate volume, you won't have a problem with it dancing. There is a little kick stand on the back that opens out so that you can angle the speaker directly at you. The only annoying thing about this device is that it can only pair with one bluetooth device at a time. It will remember the last device it was paired to.

Awesome Product for the size. Clear crisp sound and gets loud for a small portable device. Compares well against Bose Soundlink wireless speaker. This unit is much smaller plus you can talk on phone with the Soundmatters speaker and can't with the Bose. The Bose has a little better base and the Soundmatters has very good mid and highs. I put the Soundmatters speaker on a large plastic box (with base plate down) and it had base as good as the Bose. I hooked a powered sub to it and WOW!!! I am ordering a powered sub for my vehicle now after hearing how this small unit sounds with a sub. I love this device, it is small and wonderful for the size. I am very happy with my purchase. It comes to life when you crank it up some. (do not expect sound from all around you though)

I uploaded photos of my Foxl V2 Platinum with the ProClips mount in my vehicle. Very nice mount for the Foxl V2 Platinum.

Just received the item with a little skepticism...it was between ordering this and the Bose Soundlink. While I am sure the Bose product has a little better sound from what I read, it also has a bigger price tag and is a much heftier, larger product - not as portable for sure- and with no speaker phone. This little guy is incredible in sound and the "candy bar" size means I can take it wherever and whenever. I immediately hooked it up to my iPhone to try it and was blown away with how it handled and projected bass, let alone mid range and the highs. It is a very solid product and you can tell the quality is there indeed.

If you want the highest fidelity in the smallest package, this is it I am convinced by hearing it, and reading all of the buzz out there with the consumers who have purchased it. The evergreen cable that comes with it and the ext battery are very nice additions. Cant wait to demonstrate this to my friends who are into hifi sound like me.

I originally purchased the 1st generation version of the foxL portable speaker a few years back, after reading rave reviews about it online. I auditioned it for about 2 weeks and returned it, feeling very disappointed with the overwhelming distortion I heard via both Bluetooth and wired connections, even at low volumes. I was decidedly bummed, since for years I had been searching for a product which could deliver a truly portable high fidelity experience. Sad to say, the 1st gen foxL product badly missed the mark for me.

Well, I must say that the folks at Soundmatters have been busy since then, because the foxL Platinum v2.2 is a much improved product! Vastly improved dynamics and clarity, much better output and MUCH lower distortion. And while the sound quality via the "standard" wireless Bluetooth connection is certainly passable (I haven't tested the aptX connection yet), the sound quality via the supplied Audioquest Evergreen cable is astonishing! This newest version of the little foxL is a keeper!

UPDATE 4-12-12: I purchased the Sennheiser BTD 300i aptX-equipped Bluetooth dongle to try with my iPhone 4S. I wanted to see if the hype about "near CD" performance was achievable with aptX Bluetooth. If you elect to make this investment, I have a two pieces of advice: 1) shop around, the Sennheiser 300i dongle is pricey (I paid ~$80 from B&H PhotoVideo) and 2) make sure your iPhone's internal Bluetooth is turned off or you'll never get the 300i to connect with your foxL. (Of course there is no mention of this in the 300i's user manual). Follow these steps--first, turn off your iPhone's internal Bluetooth, then plug in the 300i to the dock connector, and then turn on your platinum v2.2 foxL. It will take 30 seconds or so, but they will eventually pair.
